"WizEdit ... no sales in 2008 ...."

Posted by Llevram on Mar-22-09 at 08:39 AM
As many of you know, I started giving away my tools (WizEdit & Wiz1Edit) for free, back in November of 2007. Sales had slowed to a trickle and I had no sales in 2008 ... no surprise, since I was giving away for free The real surpise was the one sale this year !

Anyhow, after just completing my taxes for this year and having roughly $100 in cost (for this web site, which has always been my place to advertise) and $0 income, I realize I need to do something to fund this relationship. I don't see a new game (* see note below) coming out from Software Specialties within this year or next and since the IRS won't let you take a loss more than 3 of 5 years running (I believe is their rule) ...

a) I will be trying to think up creative ways to fund keeping the forum alive
b) any ideas you all have are most welcome

I've always prided myself on the fact that the board is ad free and would really like to keep it that way.

* Note: I was working on some software to eliminate spam from your inbox (i.e. you don't have to download it, then delete it). I got it to the point that it worked fairly well for me, but was cumbersome ... and has a ways to go before it would be "ready for prime time". And, time is something I don't have a lot of with the remodel going on.

On another board that I spend time on, many of us chipped in a few dollars each to keep things up and running. (I mean, really a few dollars; I think $5-$6 each, but there were a lot of us participating.)

Perhaps folks here would be willing to do the same? (I would.) Love these forums and would hate to see them disappear.

I've enjoyed this board for many years. I'm in for 5 or 10.

I only get in here every 2 weeks or so, since things really slowed down. But I've enjoyed coming here for many years for free. I can spare $5-10 to keep this board up and running. So whatever you decided count me in.

Really, it makes me feel really good to hear things like this

But I should make it clear, it's not the money (I don't consider myself rich, but the $100 a year isn't going to sink me either ) .. more the principal. And I've got a year or two to solve the problem ... we'll see what opportunities present themselves.

That idea had been kicked around before ... I could easily setup something for that, but I'd like to keep that as a last resort.

And it's not anything that needs to be resolved right away .... who knows, maybe I will hit it big at the WSOP this year, can "retire" and start pumping out a game

I am...sporadic at best in posting here(half the time I cannot remember my handle or password to log in) but I can do $5-$15(a month?) if needed.

Though it has been a little bumpy swtiching hosts (which is all the fault of the old crappy host), it did reduce the cost a bit ... so, I think at $5 a month, you would be paying for the whole site

Maybe we'll have a bunch of volunteers offer to pay a whole year and draw one name out of a hat ... loser pays for the year

Great idea! Put my name in the hat.

That idea would work also but I think you would have better luck simply asking those whoa re able to donate to donate what they can(if you want to be horribly honest you can announce when you have reached a "This year is now paid for!" result). Paying for a whole year does not sound too expensive but what if one's name were drawn and then he had a medical emergency(*Cough* Like a diabetic seizure or severe spike in blood sugars that landed his skeptic butt in the hospital for a few days or a week...*cough*) or some such?

I think if every registered member that is really active paid .50 cents ... but it would be more of a pain in the butt to manage the payments than it is worth

We can "worry" about next year ... if nothing else, I can quit calling it a business or come up with another product.

I do appreciate everyone's input and concern.

I made the offer to help pay costs way back when bandwidth was a problem and the offer still stands.

I think one month my excess bandwidth was $200 (when I normally paid like $8.95 a month) ... but sales, oh how they skyrocketed ... to just cover it
