"Town doesn't work"

Posted by Marcel Overweel (Guest) on May-09-02 at 07:16 AM
I have just started the game and created a party in Valeia. I cannot enter the town hall, the magic shop and the east gate.
The buildings doesn't even show a sign when pointing at them.
Other buildings and the west gate are working.
Tried the unofficial patch and other graphic modes, but no success.

What is going wrong?

Running on WinXP and Asus geforce 3.

The same happened with me. I'm working with OS W2k. But W&W only works with W95 and W98.

So it's time for a multi boot setup... again...

Thanks for your response

To all with such problems (inactive buildings in Towns) - download VirtualDub (it's a free program), find files townmsk.avi (there are 3 of them) in the game directory. Make copies in case something goes wrong, then open them in VDub and "Save as old format .avi". If it doesn't help, repeat it for files townhub.avi.

IMO the game is worth some effort. I almost finished it (only Pyramid remaining), and I think it wasn't a waste of time.

It also works very well with Win Me, although it's installation took about 40 minutes (!). But maybe it's normal?

hay i dont know if this will work but try it

one

6.1) Canīt enter buildings in town or exit through the gates
Problem: Your town*.avi files are compressed and wonīt work in Windows 2000/XP
Solution:

Download Virtualdub. First, copy each townmskn.avi file to townmskn_orig.avi in the W&W\townavi folder. This takes about 4.5 MB of space, and will let you put the original versions back if you need them. Next, delete the original townmskn.avi files. Third, use virtualdub to open each of the townmskn.avi files. Save each file in Vdub with the "Save old-format AVI" option with a new file name (townmskn_new.avi ). You should see some strange graphics appear; you will get back a large 32MB file. Fourth, exit Virtualdub and then in Windows Explorer copy each new file from townmskn_new.avi to townmskn.avi. Try to play the game at this point; if it works, stop here. If it doesn't, repeat the process with the three townhubn.avi files. Note that this will require an extra 90Mb of diskspace for each set of three files.

Any reason why this wouldn't work? I have tried and when i just followed the process with the townmsk.avi files i couldn't enter any buildings when i had before. I then tried the same with townhub.avi and there was no picture. Did I do something wrong? why didn't it work?

Apparently there should be three town*.avi files to try this on. If all else fails (or I would maybe try this first), unistall adn reinstall.

.. their next game looked as polished. I initially gave up on W&W ... a few years later I got bored enough to give it another try. I was glad I did, because the game does have some good stuff .. but the bugs made it nearly unbearable to play (for me).

I guess I was lucky enough not to have comeplete show stoppers.

the only thing i can suggest is to download your saved games onto a disk and reinstall them on a 98 pc and play the game on there.
