I noticed that Llevram mixed the two viruses/worms.

The CodeRed affects servers who use Windows Servers NT and 2000NT. If you are not running a server, then relax. Although, getting into your ISP and other server run places maybe hard.

The Sircam Worm is something anyone can get. It comes in two forms a text file and the virus file (vbs). The text file says:

Hi. How are you?
I am sending you this file for your advice.
Thank you.

Don't open the virus file...the text file is safe to open, for that is how you know what you have. Go here to read the specs:

My husband attempted to open one, but Zone Alarm told him that it wasn't a good idea. Then I came home and whapped him for attempting it. We got 7 attempts, which were all deleted by me. I suggest getting Zone Alarm and using it with your virus software.

I have been too busy to update the announcement. The big news I was reading was about the virus, but what I really got was the worm (x3). And since I didn't have virus protection on my new PC yet, I was a little scared

Course, I don't open attachments in emails in strangely worded English when I know the person can type better than that.

Go to Symantec's site and get Norton Anti-Virus/Live Update. I think that you can get a free download and then pay for the service after 90 days and it is like $4 a year.

Virus/Worms scare me too...even though Netscape tells you what you pretty much have in the mailbox, versus Outlook Express. I am still singing praises of ZoneAlarm which is free and they just updated it to protect against attachments.

... but it was still on the old PC ... hadn't got around to moving it over (until I started getting these lovely presents). Now I am protected on both PCs.

...That and make darn sure your antivirus strings (provided you have an AV program installed) are up to date!! If you've got an AV program installed, you should be able to set it to watch you email downloads. If not, *do* get one, the relief from headaches with respect to you pc being infected is well worth it.

Actually it'll affect any version of WinNT - not just server. You can get it even if you're running Win2k Professional - It however, mainly attacks Win2k machines that are running IIS. IIS is installed be default on Win2k Server, but not on Win2k pro.

Code red can infect systems Win2k systems that are running IIS without any user action - so be check your system if this is true of yours.
