"Moral Question about Cheating (very minor spoiler)"

Posted by Asrial on Jan-05-05 at 04:52 PM
Here's my current thought...

I really don't like cheating in games at all, except to just mess around. I like playing the game the way it's meant to be played, even if it's a multiple time through.

I'm outfitting all my party members with the best of the best gear from Ferro's armory, however, this is expensive.

I can use alchemy for infinite cash, but at a really slow and boring rate of acquisition. At least, the method I'm doing with it. I'm breaking everything into single uses and then identifying each one to maximize skill gain. ..but, even if I did it in groups, it'd still be a slow process.

IF!

I intend to do nothing BUT the alchemy cash cow (which I already intend to do, even before thinking about using a money cheat), would it be morally acceptable to use a saved game editor and edit in enough cash to buy what I need to buy?

I would lose out on the skill increases, but I'd save an hell of alot of time (and maybe a few fights (those on the way into Arnika from the teleporter)).

What are your thoughts all?

I'm thinking that something like this is okay. It has drawbacks (no skill gain) alongside the bonus (immediate satisfaction).

Now, one could also go in and say...

Well, what about maximizing your stats? If I intend to keep my level 1 party at the beach playing with crabs until everyone is 100 stealth, why not just edit the stats?

Or...

Well, I intend to beat the game so why play it and just save myself the time investment?

I think it comes down to having a pre-conceived thought that X goal is your top priority that you will not deviate from, and then thinking that cheating could save you alot of time. I also feel that you must get the same result EVERY time on your path to X goal. There IS a bit of randomness with skill training, in that not every fight will you increase the skill. I dunno.

So anyways, what are your thoughts?

"Philosophical Question About Morals"
Posted by otter (Guest) on Jan-05-05 at 07:25 PM
heh, i don't think about it in terms of morals, intrinsically nothing has a moral value until you put one on it, and when nobody is getting hurt--who doesn't want to--then there's no point in checking morality, anyway.

To me the question is more like, "Am i having fun?" and the answers range from: Yes, it's a blast to watch the Skill Increase notifications pop up; it's very exciting not knowing whether the next mob will kill me; i beat the game without any outide help; etc. to: No, this mixing potions for hours is BORING; I just want to watch the mobs DIE; Heh, looky what i built myself with Mad God's editor...

I have some saves with strictly cheat-free parties, and some with wildly enhanced Uberheroes, and i play whichever i feel like at the time.

I love battles. There are two or three places just outside Arnika that I use as Battle Generators. I define a BG as a place where one can hide and rest (camp) while monsters sense your position and gather in front of you aways, but do not attack. You have the time to cast your enhancement spells, walk forward a bit and engage the monsters.

On the main Arnika road just past the dirt/sand exit from the monestary road there is a nice notch to the left which suits this purpose well. While gaining levels and spell casting practice, you will find yourself collecting a huge pile of gear that you can collect and sell off.

I usauly work it to level 12 or so before "starting" the game.

Interested in battle generator off Arnika Road.Is it possible to give more specific directions please?
Is it before turn south to Arnika?
On left when facing which direction?
Thanks.

When exiting from the Monestary road turning left toward Arnika, there are a couple of "vees" or notches on the left hand side that I use.

Plant your PC's in the back of one of these notches and camp a few turns. After a bit you should see the red "blip" on the radar screen and notice that they haven't attacked but they know where you are.

The Beginner BG (as I call it) is very deep V on the left hand side of the Arnika-Trinton road just outside of Arnika.

There are several. One of the best ones is in a hut in Trinton on the Rattkin side. After I use that one I generally don't bother with them.

Good luck.

Found this quote the other day, after looking up one of my new favorites by Sir Stephen Henry Roberts (off Analander's site: http://www.tk421.net).

"To be patriotic, hate all nations but your own; to be religious, all sects but your own; to be moral, all pretences but your own."

Anyhow, 'tis as the Otter speaks ... it is your experience, so who is tell you what is right and wrong? You are playing the game for your enjoyment (I assume), so play it how you most enjoy it.

On the flip-side, "if you have to ask, it is probably wrong".

OK, I enjoy running up my stats to get at the higher class beasts later in the game with a couple 100K spare GP in my pocket.
