"Map making software"

Hi all.

I'm curious as to what map making software there is out there. Have any of you used any map makers (random or otherwise) and what did you like/ dislike about them?
I've thought about this lately and ideally I'd have customisable terrain and symbols (because my maps are usually not gereric fantasy). Also it would be great to be able to zoom in on cities and villages by clicking on them. So ideally there would be a city generator (random or not) included.Anyone seen or used anything like this?
What features would you want in a map maker?
Would you buy one if it was available in shops (I haven't seen one for sale for many years).

There are many out there. I recall a good (online) fantasy village generator, and the site also had fantasy name generators. I got a demo copy of CC2 (Campaign Cartographer II, I think was what it was called) a while back ... wasn't real impressed.

(Sorry, don't have the URLs handy).

I don't remember where but I once found a really good fantasy name generator. It had several configurable options and created the names via parsing a text file, which allowed you to create your own or tweak existing ones.

It was very cool! I'll have to see if I can find it again.

The Everchanging Book of Names? A very good program in my opinion. It is shareware, but it can be used effectivly for many purposes even where it is a little crippled. There is no trial period, just the minor annoyance that you can only get about 10-20 names from some lists at a time.
