"Mouse lag"

Posted by Q (Guest) on Jul-22-03 at 07:15 AM
I've got a problem with the mouse interface...the on-screen pointer lags behind the actual mouse movement. That is to say the pointer starts moving after I move the mouse, and stops moving a second or so after the mouse actually stops. Anyone else had this?

I'm using a Logitech cordless which works perfectly in any other application. Changing speed/acceleration setting in properties doesn't help, nor does changing the "smoothing" setting in the game.

This is really annoying because it makes spellcasting and other interface stuff difficult to do, as the pointer takes work to center it on something...

TIA,

Q

I saw overall sluggish performance when I used the softwaer setting for rendering graphics ... aside from that, what type of system do you have? i.e. how old, how fast, current drivers, etc.

I'm playing it on a laptop (1.1mhz, 512MB, Intel grapics-3d capable). Its certainly not a gaming maching, but I have been able to play many other current games without problems (Dungeon Siege, Morrowind, Serious Sam).

The fact that this lag occurs also in the static menu/setup screens makes me feel pretty sure its not graphics card related, but I did try minimizing all grapics/performance settings anyway...no effect.

Thanks,

>1.1mhz
well, no wonder your mouse is slow, your lucky that's all that's slow :p

>Intel grapics-3d capable
try downloading and running Belarc Advisor, and checking out your Video chipset make and model, then updating those drivers for it, and see if that helps. updating directX couldn't hurt either

"I think it is your video setting"

I just tested this by setting mine to software rendering (instead fo Direct X or OpenGL), and the mouse lags, even at the options screen. With a laptop, you probably have an integrated video card, that Wiz8 probably does not support ... it needs a "real" video card.

Try going into the 3dsetup program for Wiz 8 and see what it is set at, and what other options it gives you.

Thanks for all your input!

By switching to Open GL and reducing the screen resolution I have corrected to problem 90%. Which makes playing much more enjoyable!

I am having the same problem. I am running a Compaq Presario with 33GB ...

Any suggestions?

Like, changing the video settings?

Is Eternity talking hard disk storage because there is no way he is talking clock speed. If his RAM is 33MB hus problem is that his system does not meet the minimum system requirements of the game (64MB RAM or better.)

that's (33 GB) just the hard drive size.
means nothing, as you can have a large hard drive in a 6 year old system.
the rest of your computer specs would help. specs are stuff like processor type and speed (e.g. 2.8 Ghz Pentium 4 or 900 Mhz AMD Duron; 1 Ghz = 1,000 Mhz), amount of RAM (normal values are 32 MB for old systems; 256 or 512 MBs for newer systems, and 1-2 Gigabytes for the multitasking gamer, who also happens to be printing out her epic novel, downloading a file, and sorting the list of MP3s she has)
other things, are Graphics Card, aka Video Card (e.g. ATI Radeon 9700, Nvidia Geforce4Ti4600, Cirrus Logic 5446 PCI), Operating System (Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, or XP HOME or PRO; home and pro are different enough for them to be considered different windows versions, with tech support), version of DirectX you have installed (8.0a is latest for Windows 95; all others can use DirectX 9.0b; newer DX versions may actually improve performance for most fairly modern computers), and whether or not you have downloaded and installed updated Video Card Drivers.
one last thing, launch the Wiz 8 3D setup utility. see what options are available. mainly, use OpenGL if it is available, then try Direct X modes, for sound, any Hardware mode should be right (like EAX for Soundblaster cards; and Directsound 3D for any other decent chipset. avoid the ones that say "software" or "emulation", those are slow)
a lower resolution will help improve performance (1024x768 should be fine on a 19" monitor)

Hi all,

I experienced this mouse lag problem one time.
Also, I tested many methods, but I failed.

So, I just went to buy a new mouse, and you know,
it works again!!!

So, just change your existing "sick" mouse to a new one.

Good luck.

Until I got totally sick of the Compaq 5108 and bought a HP a220n.

I had the same mouse lag problem you describe. Your video probably shares memory with the CPU's RAM. At 1.2 gigahertz I had mouse problems inside and outside Wiz 8, but the problems were totally different.

Inside Wiz 8 I had the mouse lag problem. Outside I had the mouse freeze-on-the-screen-but-the-computer-really-knows-where-it-is problem. Wiz 8 has its own independent mouse drawing software and it was able to update the mouse position on the screen whe Windows ME was unable.

I don't think the problem is speed. It is either Compaq's handling of video memory (It had other issues) or the operating system. Boosting video memory by hitting (f8 or f10?) at startup reduced the occurence of the problem but did not eliminate it.

I could have tried to fix the problem by getting a separate video card, but the machine had so many problems I didn't want to spend money on a fix that might not make a differance.
