"x64 PC issues with Wiz 1"

Posted by ksauerwald on Nov-05-15 at 04:45 AM
so I was taking my son down my memory lane trip and I started to play Wiz 1 again using the WizardryArchives version that I got that I run up through DosBox. This version doesnt make a scenario disk. So I was having fun leveling up.. and I did some cheat stuff, like if my level up stunk.. I would kill the session reopen and try again. So not sure if it was that.. or the game itself.. but two of my characters switch alignment and now they cant be in the party.

So of course I know there are several editors out there.. but the ones I got to work tell me my dsk file is not in the correct format or that its not a scenario disk. I just have the one WIZ1.dsk I dont have the scenario disk.. I just want to fix my characters alignment back to Good so I can play again.

and some of the other editors I cant even run up because I have a x64 machine and it tells me the software is incompatible.

anyone got any ideas how to fix my characters or change how I play to get a scenario disk that I can edit ?

my trip down memory lane only lasted 2 days..

Well, if you are feeling adventurous ... you could:
1. make a backup copy of your file
2. edit it by hand, with a text editor (like Slickedit ... that's what I use, circa 1997). I think things like NotePad++ will do the trick as well.
3. find the spot where one of your character starts (name) and ends (name of the next character)
4. in between names, just change one character at a time, save, test and stop when you get to the byte that changes alignment. (or you could search the 'net for that info ... someone probably has it posted ... i.e. byte 17 controls X).

That is kind of how I figured out what byte (or byte) controls what, 15+ years ago when I wrote my editor.

I was going to offer to try and edit it, but I found that I can't even install my editor on my 64 bit machine. I do have a couple XP machines around through ... So, if you want to send it my way, I can take a crack at it.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-16 AT 02:44 AM (Pacific)

Characters of differing alignment can't join at the tavern, however if you enter the dungeon with one group, leave the party while they're in the dungeon, and then send a second group into the dungeon, you can have the two groups join together regardless of alignment, so alignment should never pose a real issue that way.

Also, the DOS version is buggy with respect to stat gains - they will often trend downward, or be wildly variable even for young characters, compared to trending upwards towards 18s for young characters as they're supposed to. The DOS version was the first I played and I always wondered why my stats constantly sucked. Then I played other versions and had reliable stat gains on young characters and realized it's a bug specific to the DOS version.
