Does anyone know how the game determines if your party or the opponent are surprised? Does any particular stat (AGILITY, LUCK) or class (THIEF) improve your chances of surprising opponents?

I can't tell for sure but after an ungodly amount of hours playing Wizardry 1 I think it is purely random. My guess is only Robert Woodhead would be able to answer that one.
