"Happy B-Day to me"

Its my birthday today, and you know what I got?

A computer virus. First ever too. 1 Spyware and a couple Adware(courteosy of my sister's downloads). The problem is some of them are read only and neither I nor my anti-virus program can delete them. I know this isn't quite the best place for this post, but the good people at Symantec want upwards of $50 to tell me how to remove these cheap programs. All I am looking for is a bit of help. Whether a place to check or advice on how to change them from read only (I've already tried changing their properties by right clicking, but the option is greyed out) any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

www.download.com will have all the nessasary software for this type of problem.

Adaware and Spybot are two good programs. (I would get both)

I can't give you a name for freware antivirus because I use those expensive $50 one's and have not as yet dabbled in them.

Anyway, check it out and good luck!

to remove the Read-Only attribute, you must be logged on as Administrator (true if you are the only user), and the files must not be locked, which means an application is using them, and not allowing others access to it. usually if a file is locked, any application that needs access to the file will either crash or produce an error message. including a hex editor.
so, you may be able to find the culprit, by CTRL-ALT-Delete to get the Task List, and list what is there in a post, for many are normal and even necessary, even though they may not seem like it (such as the multiple SVCHost.exe)

I only know of 1 freeware antivirus download, AVG Antivirus. I use a free site for my virus scans, http://housecall.trendmicro.com
AVG Antivirus download
Panda free virus scan

Try AntiVir at www.free-av.de or .com (.com seems to be unavailable at the moment). Me and my friends have never had a virus on my PCs since I use this program.
