"Taking Screenshots in DOS"

Posted by James (Guest) on Oct-23-04 at 03:28 PM
Hey guys.

I have a game reviews page. On it, I have a self-requirement that I have at least two snapshots of every game I review (one is a Title Screen shot, the other is a gameplay shot). Recently, however, this has caused me a problem with regards to old DOS games--games, specifically, in which I need to run them in DOS (using a shortcut or otherwise) to even play them.

So, how do I take screenshots of a game in DOS mode, while it's running?

Thanks in advance.

a few options. Print Screen key, pressed by itself, will take a snapshot of the whole screen, and copy that information to the Windows Clipboard (originally used to print to the printer). hold ALT, and just the current Window will be snapshotted (doesn't matter which is used in Full Screen, though)
then, open up Paint or something, and PASTE it in there.
alternatively, Irfanview has a Hotkey function, which can save a captured image as any file type you can imagine, at your command, or at pre-determined intervals.

now, if your using DOSBox, you can press CTRL-F5 to save a screenshot.

You don't understand.

When I say "Run in DOS" I mean I actually have to reboot the system into DOS mode. Thus the Print Screen key/copy and paste routine is not an option.

sorry about that. pure DOS mode uses the Print Screen key to print directly to the printer (which is where the name comes from, btw). a better way, is to use DOSbox to Emulate it within windows, and use its Screen shot feature (F9 I believe)

although it is still technically possible to use 2 computers, and a video capture card (only video capture cards I know of, however, work with RCA plugs or Coaxial cable, not the VGA output most monitors use.
or, output to a VCR (RCA jacks), and record it. then play it back, through the computer's video input jacks, and record the frame you want.
