Greetings all. I wanted to play this game again, but I was so spoiled by the automap in Gold (I never found the map kit when I played the original version back in the day) I simply can't go back to the original version no matter how much MORE I like it.

That seemed to be solved when I found this mod of Dosbox posted online...here is the youtube video.

Has anyone used this? For the life of me I can't get it to work. I can get CODS set up in Dosbox and working, but as soon as I replace the normal Dosbox icon replaced by the AutoMapMod version every time I click on anything on the main menu (even attempting to change the configuration in-game) it says:

INSERT SAVEGAME DISK INTO DRIVE

and then it loads a nameless, 0 HP Fighter character and freezes up. Strange, especially since this exact setup with the normal Dosbox version loads and plays just fine. I simply can't get anywhere, or even change configurations with this one.

Any ideas!? HELP!

I'm not quite following this, probably cause I never used DOS box. I'd check with the folks that provided the mod, maybe pose the question under their Youtube video.

I posted pretty much the same thing on the youtube page, but it seems pretty sparely viewed and commented. We shall see.

I just want to play DOS-DS with the automap like in Gold! Perhaps it truly IS too much to ask! ha

Fortunately it is enough that you alone re-watch carefully that youtube video. The answer you are looking for is at 1:38 where is clearly stated something like :

"If your party does not possess journey map kit the auto-map would not be shown"

I guess that reflects the way that mod is probably done. I suppose they identified memory block where automap data are kept (and how) and modded it to continuously write updated copy of it to some file, which is being read and map drawn by some external program. Of course, if the party does not possess map kit there is no automap data generated by the original program and no map.
Fortunately "journey map kit" is easy obtainable at start of the game, but you would still need to develop "mapping" feature, I guess.

Well, the one thing I do know ... after you play it long enough, the automap is all in your head

I was going to give in and just play Gold again but that won't even open the install program on Windows 7....oh lordy!
