"Problem: Dos-Box-CODS game stops/freezes during play"

Posted by Dandiphoot on Jul-19-09 at 10:09 AM
I'm facing a problem within my CODS-game (played with DosBox).
I left the countryside with the Wikum Boat and cruised via the DragonMountains. The problem occured while taking the boat ride for the first time and became critical after deafting Brombadeg (if that does mean anything at all). While resting and even within the normal game (while walking) the whole game stops - to be seen very clearly as the landscape movements (water, birds, daytime) are frozen for almost 10 seconds, if not longer. Resting is quite unbearable with that, to admit, the game is almost unplayable.

I'm not sure if that has something to do with the Dragonmountains or Brombadeg (i doubt it). Was anybody affected by this (bug?)?
Does anybody have a hint for me?

Thanks!

I had this problem myself. It only occured while I was on the boat, so I just grinned and beared it - ok, more like a gnashing of teeth. It seemed to have solved itself.

As a suggestion, ff you have any edits to the files try a fresh one and see if its still there. Not sure what caused (or solved) my problem, but it's a start.

Your problems reminded me of a bug I encountered in 1993... but Sir-Tech sent me the patches which corrected the movement problems on the sea. Surely your games are patched?

It's v1.20 - from the w6&7 CD-compilation (German)...so I'm not sure.
How to find out if it's patched?

I tried some changes in the Dos-Box config, changing the cycle-amounts and it seems to work. The whole game is rushing with that settings, but that could be balanced with changing the delay within the CODS-configuration.
Unfortunatly my system crashed after several minutes, but that might result from my rotten hardware.

You can try "Dark Savant Bug Fix" (cdspatch) here:

http://www.tk421.net/wizardry/files.shtml

It is the same I got in 1993.

I tried it, but it didn't help...the game crashes with a runtime error as soon as i load a savegame.
Thanks for your help anyways.

I think I'll try out some Dosbox-configurations.

From what I remember when I used to play the DOS version, everything just naturally becomes...slower...later.

It was so hideously slow resting that it really WAS faster to run to the nearest beneficial fountain and drink.

One more thing came to mind: My original CoDS didn't work at all with DosBox. I finally got a working copy here, complete with DosBox:

I haven't sailed the sea yet, though, in that version of W7.
