"Help with sound please?"

I've easily gotten wiz7 running flawlessly on my laptop, under win98se.. just using moslo to spawn command.com and running it from there.. It was installed from my original 720k floppies, can't believe they even work still. Anyway, the problem is audio. The notebook (it's a compaq presario 1200 XL118) has onboard AC97 type garbage.. Is there a way to get DOS to recognize the damn thing? I've already set it to SB compatibility mode in bios, with settings of 220/5/1.. I DO own a 286 with a hardcard and soundblaster 1.0, but my place is so small I'd rather leave it in storage.. Besides, that ISA Soundblaster 1.0 with CMS chips is gonna be worth some cash some day.. ANYWAY!! I've tried the 'viafmtsr.com' file, and several versions of viaudio.com, as well as installed more different driver packages than I care to think about. Still no sound, no music.. I've tried various combinations of configs from vinstall.exe, and absolutely none of them are working. I've tried it booting direct to DOS, tried dos windows from 98se, etc etc.. I'll it this way.. has ANYONE gotten their onboard via ac97 to work with this game in soundblaster mode? Please help ???

BTW, some people were mentioning a credit card that comes with the game, I've been carrying mine in my wallet for 13 years.. It's the MordorCharge, and the coolest card ever.. Think it was also an in-game item in wiz4.. ANYway.. sorry for my verbosity.. I just miss the whining cries of bambiphoots as I mercilessly gut them, and the cool military grunts of the gorn.. and the cool music when you sleep.. etc!

Hey if anyone can actually help me get sound working in dos mode.. on this computer.. I'll send ya some cash in the mail, how's that?

TIA

Well, I've always had the same difficulty with DOS sound and such on newer computers as well. I actually broke down and bought a DOS machine on Ebay about two years ago. The price of the computer... $5. Shipping was $20!

It actually came from Columbine just after the shooting. People felt so bad for what happened there that they upgraded all their old, antiquated 486 pieces of crap and gave them new stuff.

But, I digress.

For this problem, I would throw out Moslo, DOS and all those other antiquated programs and things, and get myself a copy of Dosbox.

One handsome devil even made a page dedicated to getting Wizardry 7 working in Dosbox, if you go here:

The problem there is that my computer cannot run dosbox at anything close to an acceptable rate.. If I had another free pcmcia slot, I'd get one of those sound blaster audigy thingys, bet they work in dos.. Oh well.. I'll just keep on tryin..

VIA sucks, just for the record..

I hear you, Dosbox can be a memory hog.

Have you tried adjusting the cycles and frameskip to something that runs the game better? I found that going to an area where there is music and adjusting them until the sound stops skipping is a good way to gauge where they should be.

As for other options, I had the exact same audio chip on my old desktop, and I found no way to emulate sound in a DOS environment through it. The best I can offer in that realm is suggesting that you purchase a Soundblaster Audigy or whatever the new card is, because those tend to work in DOS well.

Aside from Dosbox as a free alternative, have you tried VDM Sound? It's supposed to emulate DOS sound, or the DOS environment, or some such thing that lets you play old games. I've never gotten it to work, opting for the more user-friendly and powerful Dosbox, but if cycles and frameskip tweaking are not working, that might be a good bet.

The problem with VDMSound is it seems to require 2000 or XP.. I tried installing it, and it said I'd need one of those.. Just in case it matters for somethin else, what I've got is an AMD K6 (can't remember if its K6-2 or not) 500mhz, 192 megs ram, 98SE.. Thanks for tryin, anyway..
