"Getting NPCs to talk to my party"

Posted by ashara on Sep-14-04 at 02:53 PM
I know from scanning old messages that if you're playing Wiz Gold, diplomacy doesn't help if you've not reached certain points in the game(and yes,I'm playing wiz gold on XP).
While I think I've figured out most of them, what do I need to do to get Mick the Pick or Ratsputin to talk to me?
I really need the help since Barlone's got the legend map, and the only thing I can think of doing is to get these guys to talk to me so I can get to Barlone when he's "leaving".
I've tried stalling in getting back to barlone with the coordinates and trading lore (even though it's to fast to read unless I'm lucky with the space bar) with danes, the professor and Jan-Ette(who for some weird reason has decided to ally with Magne Dane). No dice.
Any suggestions?

have you been to the Rattkin Ruins and talked to Blienmeis? Bertie also sells some stuff you might like.
When trying to get to the Trade/lore/talk phase for an NPC, it is needed to talk with the other of his/her kind, and help them out a bit, then word will spread of your good deed, and if you heed the words of that character, you should be able to talk with the rest of his clan, which means all wandering variety of Rattkin or whatever.

Yes, I've seen Billemnes and Bertie (traded, gotten rumors, and shared lore). I've seen Barlone
(once now, since I'm working from an earlier save game). I've even gone back to the professor Since I already did old city).
Should I just be giving them something, and if so, what?

(I think that was the right term)

.. to find out where the rats are hanging out. Isn't there a locate person scroll or spell as well for that?
Anyhow, find out where they are (if they are not dead), and look for them.

Hanging on to a lot of maps tends to draw the NPCs to you as well.

Lore doesn't help, since it scrolls by too fast to read.
Locate person doesn't help, since the info pops up and disappears to rapidly to read.
I've got six maps now, and I'm being pestered by everyone except rattkins.
Is there anyway to attack Barlone and try and get the maps that way?
( I really want the cane of corpus for my ninja, but I figure killing off billemis will assure rattkin hostility)

It is an item you are meant to have .. no hostility results (besides, diplomacy is broken )

and, one can get 2 Canes, since Wiz 7 does not check if you got it the first time. might be 3, if you go to the thieves guild first, but I'm not sure of that.
I've done it myself, and every rattkin still talked to me, well, the ones that were still alive anyway...

Thanks. I finally got the legend map by giving t'borra the umpani co-ordinates and he got the map from Barlone (or someone).
Then, finally,Ratsputin shows up and starts bleeding me dry up in the mountains. I'm on my way to get the cane now,(and the displacer cape).
Allthough I'm computor challenged, I'm going to try the text fix, since I'd like to know just what the locate spells do and what lore is all about.
