"weapon damage"

i just started playing wizgold, and there is someting that confuses me concerning the damage output.

since my monk has learned the IDENTIFY spell, I wanted to try it on some weapons.
some results were:

-naginata dmg 1 to 10
-bo dmg 1 to 10 +1
-broadsword dmg 3 to 12
-awl pike dmg 3 to 12
-spear dmg 1 to 10

well, that really confused me. a bo better than the naginata??? broadsword so good although it is one-handed??? simple spear=naginata ???

then i took a look into the armory catalog (the hint book) an the numbers I found were different, like

-naginata 1-12
-bo 1-6 (+1 to hit)
-broadsword 3-8 and so on...

this seems more realistic, but why are these results different from the identify-numbers? is it because my monk is at low level (lvl 8, I am exploring orkogre) ?

and what other factors have effect on the damage, since my lord often swings his broadsword for more damage than just 12. is it the characters strength? or weapon skill?
and how can I determine how much damage my monk deals with hands and feet(strength?), because i want to know if it would be better to give him the naginata. well, I do not think so since he is my best killer so far...

sorry for my english, I hope everyone could unterstand my problems.
greetings!

Strength adds (or subtracts if below 6, i think) damage.
Hand and Foot generally is best for Monk, but there is one extremely good Staff you can get rather late in the game.
It may be that Wiz-Gold has different values than "true" Wiz-7 for all aspects of the game.
There are two Naginatas, indistinguishable except for the damage values. (i think one shows as +1 or the like under some (i forgot) circumstance)

.. but the bug in the software, that is leading you astray. WizGold has a bug in identifying weapons damage ... trust the book (or get another program that is accurate ).
