"Wizardry-like games"

Posted by Jay on Feb-17-00 at 12:36 PM
I have the perfect arrangement with my fiancee. Everytime we go to the mall I agree to go to the stores she wants if she lets me take a stop at the software store. Of course, after the Archives came out I have not found a game that interests me . I read the posts and reviews for Bradley's new game and it has me excited. It seems to me that Bradley's game is the only one comming out or that is out that is anything like Wizardry. Does anyone know any games that are like Wizardy? I dont like the Diablo-like games, or the games like StarCraft. I want a traditional roleplaying game. But alas I cannot find one. I am content with Wiz7 and after I am done with it I will start over with Wiz1, but I would really like to find a Wiz7-like game. Does anyone know of any?

Thanks,
Jay

It is a lot more concerned with details, in some aspects adn less so with others. The character creation/maintenance is more detailed (I thought) and the navigation through the world was less so. This game (a trilogy which I played #2 and have bought, but not installed #3) was based on the German (?) RPG system called Das Schwarz Auge (sp?) ... meaning the dark age.

You should be able to find it on some bargain rack for under $5 .. worth a try anyway, while we are waiting

Actually, as one who sprechen sie deutch (speaks German), I must correct you. Sorry...ducking to avoid being smacked.

Auge=means eye or to look or see...

Alter=age

It was a great game though, but it means the dark eye...something evil.

Sorry Rick dear...but if I hadn't said something Jog would have.

By the way, do play this game...

I heard that the first game is definately better than the rest, is that true?

Blessings~

I thought that the second one (Star Trails) was by far the best one. The entire series was called "Realms of Arkania" in English, the first one was Blade of Destiny, the second was Star Trail, and the third was Shadows Over Riva (at least to the best of my rather poor memory). The second had some major improvements over the first, most especially in the area of a better plot, but the third one really felt like a step back to me -- it had some slightly better graphics, but not much more.

The game was great, since you explored in "real time" and then once you got into combat you were taken onto a real war-game type environment where the area was graphed onto squares, and you had to use a certain amount of action points to move, attack, cast spells, etc. -- in short,a great turn based combat system that reminded me of playing D&D with figurines.

There was a huge amount of detail -- the one negative side to that is that much of it (like, for example, many skills) turned out to be somewhat useless, and other parts of it (like boots tearing and having to eat) turned out to be really annoying. But, altogether, a great, true to its roots, crpg.

I thought the illness, boots tearing, etc added to the realism and made it fun. It prevented characters from hording all this gold and buy big bad weapons and armor. They had to spend it on mundane things as well.

Have you tried the Bard's Tale trilogy? It is a Interplay item as well..."The Ultimate RPG Archives".

It is very similar to Wizardry and my husband seems to think that it is much better. I do not agree with him, only because I have been playing Wizardry for alot longer.

Check that title out or you can see if you can find the early Might & Magic or the early Ultima series. Those are my personal faves as well.

I am like you though, I go into software places and all I see is crud. Nothing like Wizardry...

Beleive it or not, I prefer the first few Wizardrys, compared to everything that has been released in the last couple of years.

Blessing~

Hi everybody, did anyone say *German* ?
I must admit that everything is said. DrSlop is definitely right in every aspect and you, my divine Lady, proved yourself to be not only reliable concerning German but have *the right taste*. If anyone reading these posts shouldn't know the mentioned crpgs - play'em, they ARE the best choice.
Personally I liked all of the AD&D games too, but the athmosphere can't keep up with the said ones.

Hey dearie,

I knew if I said Deutsch, that you would come running.

I have played some of the AD&D games in CRPG format. I would like to get more. I have the Dungeon Master Assistant as well.

I am still in the middle of King's Quest, Bard's Tale, Wizardry and Ultima, and I doubt that I could find anything on my Apple ]I am addicted to CRPG's, heck I am also addicted to RPG's as well. }) I believe that there is no help for us...don't really care though.

Grimoire will be a better game than Wiz 8 if they ever finish it. I played the original beta and it was nearly as good if not better than Wiz 7. But owing to delays it has been forever in production. It might be finished this year soon though.

Look at the site:

Looking at some the screen shots I get the impression that this is what W8 would have looked like if Sir Tech produced it 3 or so years after W7. Nice fountain.

Will it kick arse? Hmmm......

Clive, the developper behind Grimoire, sure seems to think his game will be better than Wiz8,
have a look at:

http://grimoire.blinkingdot.com/news.html

I agree with Marc though: Grimoire is an evolution on Wiz7 (Wiz 7 with different story and races and in 800*600 resolution)

IMOH, the things that will set Wiz8 apart are:
- SciFi elements mixed in
- new Gadgeteer class (with finally some good laserguns to kick the Umpani's big asses)
- attack by surprise from long-range (keep that elven bow and peacemakers handy !)
- consistently well-defined races (e.g. Umpani vs. T'rang)

Needless to say, I will be purchasing all three games.Hell, by the time they come out, I'll be a millionaire <sad grin>

Hail the patient, for they will prevail !
(repeat 10 times)

First I'd suggest Realms of Arkania Trilogy, made also by Sir Tech. You can buy the trilogy box that has all three games (Blade of Destiny, Star Trail, Shadows over Riva).

Ok...ok... I may be new to this website, but there are some games I know about... For instance The Bards Tale for NES is probably one of the best Wizardry-like RPG's out there... except for that top view they give you... blah. Other games include Might and Magic (try the first one... better then Wizardry!) and some weird german game (might have been the one listed above.. can't be sure).
