Well, after the install finally completed, I decided to stay home and give Wizardy Online a try instead of going to play poker ... one huge problem to start: when I launch it, it fails to play some movie, then turns my entire display upside down. Once I exit the game it is back to normal though ...

Not an auspicious beginning ... and I suspect since everyting was lagging, that my laptop is not quite up to the minimum requirements for the game ...

"Backwards compatible?"

How about upside down comaptible? So, the issue (per their support staff, after I sent them all of my diagnostic files) was that my laptop has old (non-supported) video drivers (circa 2009).

They recommended I update them. Turns out, they are as up-to-date as I can get for my PC, running XP Pro. So, I played it upside down long enough to finally get to the options screen and (like others I found with the same issue), turned off full screen mode and play it in a window.

Now, I have to learn the keyboard mappings (looks daunting) and figure out how to play.

I got it to the point I need to invest time to learn how to play it ... and stopped there. I need a weekend where I don't have anything else going on, to take a run at it again.
