"Item quality versus difficulty level"

LAST EDITED ON Feb-06-07 AT 03:02 PM (Pacific)

Hello everyone, I'm new here. Greetings to all my fellow Wizardry players! Now, on to business.
Does difficulty level have any impact on the quality of the goodies I get? This is my first time playing Expert(and they mean it) and my third play through over all. This is also my first party that I've carried all the way from Bane to Wiz8. On this play through I've found: a bushido blade when I killed Z'Ant's rapax assassin, and both the *light sword* and frontier phaser in the same chest on Bayjin, not to mention a whole assortment of new goodies dropped by monsters (though that might be because I don't run away from massive groupings of bad guys anymore). So, does Expert level increase the chances of getting the really good stuff or have I just been really lucky?

Another question:
Does anyone know of anywhere where I can buy powerpacks? I know about the ones you can find on the Swamp beach (I also had several others that I found somewhere, don't remember where) but I used those up already

You've just been really lucky.

"Does anyone know of anywhere where I can buy powerpacks?"
You can't. However, you do not need them. Unlike CODS, the frontier phaser works fine without using powerpaks.

(Anna in Arnika) Or is that some other energy source?

Looking at powerpacks using MG editor, Anna, He'li, and Jan-ette drop them and they are found in the mine tunnels and swamp. No sales people for powerpacks.

Are you sure the Frontier Phaser works without the Power Paks? I know the character doesn't mention running out of ammo when the powerpaks are all gone, but when I ran out the gun icon flashed but nothing happened, still, it could have been one of those random flashes that happens to me sometimes when I use modern weapons. I'll have to try again. Thanks. As for being lucky, you have no idea because I forgot to make a backup save before entering Bayjin (*grins sheepishly*).
*light bulb*
Can you carry powerpaks over from Wiz7?

Positive: I've done it in-game.

Not according to my import list, but it has been a while since I created that. If you have Llevram's editor, it's pretty easy to test this for yourself.

Yeah, you're right; I just tried it. So, what's the point of the powerpaks then? The Frontier Phaser has a little number next to it that indicate the charges in it, do the power paks increase the strength of the weapon, or is it some feature that wasn't fully implemented during production?

To my knowledge, no one has found any use for them. They are probably just a relic: put into the game early on, because they were in CODS, but never removed when the decision was made not to require them for the frontier phasers (or anything else). The game is filled with such relics, some that actually appear in the game (power paks), many that do not (necromatic helm, maenad's lance, etc.).

On the plus side, these are good mod-fodder.

Does not it fires once only when it has no charges left regardless of your character's swings per attack? Or it was in CODS only?

In CODS, the phasers and the glove used power paks in much the same way that a blunderbuss or musket used poweder & shot: you "merged" the ammunition with the weapon, and you then had the number of shots up to the amount the particular weapon could hold (1 for musket, 2 for blunderbus, I think about 10 for a phaser, etc.). In W8, I have confirmed that no such "ammunition" is necessary for the phasers: they can be fired again and again and again without ever coming near a power pak.
