"Looking for another Wizardry-type FRPG"
Posted by BRO,JD (Guest) on Jun-08-06 at 01:38 PM
My wife and I are looking for a new CRPG.
We're looking for a non-FPS, party-based game like the old Might & Magic, Wizardry, and Wizards and Warriors games. We also enjoyed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I don't think I have the free time to play any of the online games - I just can't compete with people who can play 6 hours a day 7 days a week. My wife is not a fan of the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games - she likes the first-person view, even if the combat is turn-based. We also tried Morrowind and could not get into it.
Unfortunately, the M&M/Wizardry party-based games seem to be going the way of the dodo. I haven't seen any releases on any similar games lately. Have I missed one? Does anyone have any recommendations for any similar games?

It is probably 10+ years old now, and hard to find. It was first person in travel mode, but switched to a top down at an angle (isotropic?) view for combat, on a square grid system. There are a few old posts about this game on the board somewhere ...

The old diskette-version isn't easy to find. But there is a compilation on CD of all 3 Arkania games. (Second game is best)

It's very sad, those games have disappeard. "Dungeon Master", "Bloodwych", "Lands of Lore", "Eye of the Beholder I-III" are some old first-person-view games. Then there are the old SSI AD&D games. First-person-Exploring, isometric combat. "Pool of Radiance, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades", "Pools of Darkness", "Secrets of the Savage Frontier", "Treasures of the Savage Frontier" , "Champions of Krynn", "Death Knights of Krynn", "Dark Queen of Krynn". There is a cheap compilation with all of them plus the "Eye of the Beholder series".
Bard's Tale 1-3 of course.
Realms of Arkania and it's sequel Startrail. Combat is isometric and rather lengthy, but the games are complex and not too easy.
Perhaps one day we shall see a new masterpiece created with the wizardry editor?

I want mind numbing endless rounds of repetitive combat, and I found that in Demise: rise of the Ku'tan ;) No tedious quests just pure dungeoncrawling and the promise of reaching level 999.Oblivion is ok for questing but combat's blah, everything scales to your level even loot so it's never a challenge especially once you start enchanting constant effect gear. And oh boy yet more endless walks through the pretty wilderness, ho hum been there done that. Dungeons on the other hand are all drab it's like they put everything slap up top there finished.
Even the leveling system hasnt been fixed from Morrowind, same old tedious skill juggling just to get max +5 +5 +5 per levelup and in the end it all doesnt matter cause the enemies are pushovers, even the tough ones you can just run around while your constant effect gear heals you. Even Wizardry's combat was more fun than this.

Actually, I would really love to do a Wizardry 9. I'm going (back) to school for a degree in Game Design and Development. When I get hired to start making games -- *crosses fingers* -- I'm going to try to get ahold of the license to do it.

OOH if a fan-based Wiz9 ever does get started I definitely want to be involved. That would be the ultimate.
