"Odd Ironman survival and question about Elemental mechanics"

Posted by carcophan on Apr-07-05 at 03:26 PM
Hello Board,

I am playing an Ironman game on easy since it's my first time playing in Ironman mode. Today I was heading into the rattkin tree from Trynton floor when I backed right off the elevator and was suspended in midair. I puzzled for a few seconds and then got a crushed message. I was annoyed but then quickly reloaded and the game started me where it had autosaved just before. I thought you couldn't do that in Ironman?

Another thing I was wondering is what governs the type of elemental you get? For a while I had a theory that terrain determines it but that doesn't seem to be the case...although I think I get more earth elementals in the Mountains.

Stronger elementals hit harder, more often, and the highest level elementals cast weak spells. I really like elementals, although water ones seem fairly inefficient, but it's a change from previous wizardry games. In 6 and 7 I thought it was great how different creatures would come, and in different numbers depending on power level and random factors.

Enough babbling,
carcophan

"Ironmode Reload"

Ironmode saves in two conditions: entering a new zone (ie. having left Trynnton for the Upper Branches) and immediately after a succesful combat. (which can cause trouble if you reload, because it can save before the drops fall and you lose the drop when you reload).
Elemental type is random, i think, but their level depends upon your spell's power level.

I believe in a crushing death, you are resurrected right before the spot you got squashed. This was due to some extra-ordinary cases of in-game physics gone wrong. For instance, if you stand next to the mine cart and touch the 2x4 piece of wood ... and it falls against you ... you are crushed.

That would cause some folks to go postal in iron man mode

Thank you to Otter and Llevram for the responses. I have gotten crushed by elevators and geomancers many a time. It is good that they included that feature in Ironman mode. I'm off to chip away at some adamantium slimes, which can be a trifle tedious. Good for skill building though.

Cheers,

""Iron Man" on easy versus "Aluminum Man""

Or, you could boost the difficulty to Normal, then go into the savegame folder and copy the savegame to your desktop. When you die "too much", exit Wiz 8 then copy the savegame from the desktop back to the savegame folder. Very useful for those times you are watching TV while playing, or stop for lunch and forget to hit Pause and the team gets attacked in Search mode so the geomancers can sneak up close and get a free round of pounding while you munch pizza in the dining room.

With my solo faerie ninja I had only earth magic with any significant level (quicksand). And every elemental I created was earth, right to the end. This may have something to do with the selection.
