Is there anything that I I can do to keep my spells from backfiring/fizzling? I've tried to up the piety and Intellegnece of the casters, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

At the moment, I have a "level 21" alchemist that fizzles when he casts in the yellow. He spent 10 levels as a psionic and 11 as alchemist. So your level matters.

What levels are your spellcasters ? Are you constantly casting in he yellow, orange or red ?

Yes, have a read of pages 79-80 in your Game Manaul, it details about the different spell power coloured rings (ie, green = ok, yellow = may fizzle/backfire, orange = likely to backfire/fizzle, and red = ... well you get the idea!)

Visit http://wiz8.web1000.com/ for a spreadsheet that allows you to enter in your spellcasters stats, and it will tell you what spells the character can learn, or for spells that they are not yet able to learn, it will tell you how many points they need, or why your character can't learn the spell.

The skills for your Spellbook (Wizardry, Alchemy, etc) allow you to learn hegher-level spells.
The skillsfor Realms (fire, water, etc) make the red circles go away, even more than level. As soon as your level allows you to cast a given spell, a max in its Realm will allow you to cast it in yellow at max power. (and then levels will turn the yellow green)
