my samurai is just Biting right now. (lvl 10). dont remember his stats offhand, but he does about half the damage of the fighter per hit. is this normal? (i usually dont finish these types of games, and am trying to rectify this).

I'm going to guess that a lot of people are going to come in here and tell you the stats and what exactly is going to happen with your samurai over the next few levels. They're probably right. Me, I'd stick with him, but that's partly because every party I've ever made has had a samurai in it. There are a couple of swords out there that make him a more potent fighter until his critical skill gets high enough, then you give him an enchanted wakizashi and the muramasa and let him go to town. The fighter with his berserk ability will do lots of nifty things, but the extra odd spell, and the occasional "<name> strikes with lightning speed and hits for x6...damage...damage...damage...damage...Instant Kill!!!" makes it worth it for me.

heh...apparently i forgot to mention...i have yet to actually use the fighters berserk ability. i suppose my promary question is 'should i be spending points raising his str (which doesnt seem to be helping a whole lot) or something else (say speed and senses).

Speed snd senses and dexterity contribute to the two samurai's advanrages over a fighter critical kill and lightening strike. Any hybrid will be slower to evolve than a pure type but in the end can really kick major butt.

Give your samauri the bloodlust sword and he/she will start impressing you on a regular basis. Just be aware that it is cursed so to remove it you will need a priest or bishop.

I agree. Give your Samurai the Bloodlust sword until you get either the Marumasa(spelling?) or Light sword. You won't be disappointed. Strength helps with damage a bit but the built-in berserk mode and extra swing of Bloodlust compensates pretty well. Lightning strikes with Bloodlust can be pretty devastating too. It will also force you to use magic more but, IMO, that's a good thing.

In addititon to what has already been said, hybrid characters (such as Samurais, Lords, Monks etc.) start to kick ass rather late in the game, when the normal characters (Fighter, Mages, Thiefs etc.) already peaked, because the hybrids need more stats and skills to work on. Another three or four levels of experience will certainly make a difference for your sam.
