"Magic Resistance question"

Posted by mkaderavek on Mar-23-04 at 02:22 PM
Can anyone please explain how magic resistance works - once resistance shows as being 100, does resistance keep increasing even though the display maxes out at 100?? (Many monsters have resistances well above 100 in certain realms, which suggest 100 is not the max).

With my solo bishop (soon to be ninja, currently level 19), I'm trying to balance and max out all magic resistances. If magic maxes out at 100 or close to that, there would be little sense in casting soul shield and elemental shield, which would waste two rounds of combat.

BTW, in an earlier game I had a bishop with very high divine resistance, elevated by wearing an amulet of healing. After casting soul shield, my bishop's resistance went into the red (negative or very low from memory), which would suggest it had exceeded a certain limit, and started again from scratch ?!?!

I wonder about this myself. In fact, RFS-81 had a 100 in mental resistance in one of my games (don't know if it is part of the 'android immunities'). When I fought higardi ghosts and other spellcasting enemies, he went insane a lot of times, and even got turncoated once in a while... How odd.

Could it be that if a character has a, say, mental resistance of 100, that it is very likely to resist mind spells from creatures equal to or lower than that character's level? So in other words, if a level 11 char with 100 mental resistance would encounter a level 15 enemy casting insanity spells at that char, would that spell drive the character insane despite the 100 mental resistance? IMO this could be the case, given the fact that the enemy is a more powerful creature than the character.

Don't know about that 100+ resist on monsters, though. Perhaps it has something to do with powercast.

First, all characters get 25 per realm at creation. Then, you add or subtract the race modifiers as a base resistance.

Add armor and other artifacts. Amulet of healing does give 50% to Devine resistance. Cloak of many colors adds 10% to all. Ligtht Shield add 90% to Fire and Water. Just watch those Rapax fire spells bounce off!!

Now add magic shield for a astounding 35% to all realms.

Durning battle:
Add Soul Shield 35% to Mental Divine
Element Shield 35% to Air and earth

Now, if combat spells get though to our guys, I have noticed that resistance at least from _shields_ seem to reduce with time. I have noticed that as you watch the resistance screen you will sees some odd figures. That helps explain why some characters might get affected even though we think we have a high resistance.

Hope that helps.

I think things are similar to what we saw in Wiz 7. 100% is a relative term ...

I think of it as 100% of your capability ... your capability at level 7 is much less than at level 20. Similar concepts probably apply to the expert skills.

Llevram, I believe you've hit the nail on the head. My ultra EXP party walks around AP and is not affected by magic 99.99% of the time even without enhancement buffong spells

Guys,

I think you're right and what you say about the importance of your level (relative to that of the monsters) is what I'm seeing.

My solo fairie (level 19) currently little or no problems with most magic attacks (no problem with dreadmares, geomancers, etc.) except for some very high level sprites (who were some 10 levels higher). Long lasting physical attacks (e.g. juggernauts, several higher level golems, etc.)are a little more challenging (only until we change to ninja with the CoC). Ascension Peak will be interesting though, as my expeience has shown that there are always some higher level creatures, no matter what level you're at.
