I am a huge fan of CODS, it's one of the coolest games around. I recently bought the cd-rom version for my 99' compaq presario. I believe I have an athlon 1 processor. When I tried to install the game on windows 98' it seemed to install fine but, I could not play it. Every time I ran the program in MS-DOS prompt it would say I have performed an illegal operation and would terminate. It also said I would have to close out all other programs as well. Please help me!!!!! Any ideas?

In order to run it you will need the so called Pentium Patch, available elsewhere on this website, I believe.

I tried the patch but still no luck. When I go to use the patch it tells me I have a overlay error 1011 or something like that. I also tried the other shortcut and it says it cannot find wing32.dll. Any further advice anyone? Help PLEAAAASE!

It is either the command you are runnning is from the wrong directory (i.e. it is not finding that file where it expects to) or (most likely) your CPU is too fast and that is causing things not to load/run properly.

To fix the speed issue, you need to get a utility like Moslo (may come with your CD or you can get it from various sources, like my main site) and run that, in your DOS session, first, before starting Wiz 7.

Another thing you can do is use the search feature of the forum, using all these words:
ERROR 10 loading overlay VINIT

You will find a few threads that may help.

as i remember, CoDS MUST be installed into C:\dsavant. if you try to use any other, you will get the VINT error. that is the ONLY directory CoDS will look in for the files it needs.

Still no luck fellas. I am beginning to think it's the computer. I get to the point to type "PLAY" so I can start and the computer freezes, everytime. Anymore suggestions

Srangest stuff with this hunk of crap computer. I use the MS-DOS prompt icon 7 times in a row. The game actually played once. I got to create a character and it asked me if I wanted to create a shortcut icon to play. I did. It doesn't work. Got back playing again after about 7 tries and 6 "terminating programs" later. I went as far as the question of making a shortcut again, i said no. Went on to play and encountered a few creatures. The game so incredibly slooooooow. It took me 20 minutes to kill 2 bambiphoots in two rounds. I've yet to figure this out. I tried to run moslo and it made no difference. I have an athlon amd 500mhz processor. How can this 1992 vintage be so slooow! Please HELP!!

DOS programs when run on newer (remember 1992 wasn't so new when Wiz 7 was made) computers, will have problems due to speed. If you run Moslo (or a similar utility, you should be fine.

Thanx for all the help Llevram. As you can tell I don't know a lot about computers. I downloaded moslo from your sight and unzipped it. But, how do I control the %? The last thing it says after unzipping is " Pgm. name must include extension (.com or .EXE)and be in the current directory or include a valid path name". What is my next step? Thanks again

xx is the percentage of slowdown, to run on a 1 Ghz (1,000 Mhz) CPU, to have the game run like it's on a 50 Mhz CPU:
50 is 5% of 1,000
moslo.com /5 dsavant.exe
(moslo must be in the dsavant folder)

does anyone have a step by step for how to setup the game?

I'm on a 533 celeron, running windows 98 and have CoDS on CD. I can't get anything to load and am not sure where to copy files too.

I've been all over this board, but read too many broken strand instructions. I've downloaded mslo, but can't figure out how to work it? Does anyone have a start to finish set of instructions?

You should just download "DosBox" from "Sourceforge". I don't the exact link, but you can find it using google i think.

At least i played it with moslo on a 1,4 Ghz machine with no errors but a few sound bugs which weren't THAT annoying.

Thing about DOSbox, If I remember correctly, there was a thing about Soundblaster not working properly, so set the sound to PC Speaker. I use DFend though, so everythings set automatically. That may be why I can't get it to run on my machine.

if you're still having trouble with it; try this; when your computer first starts, go into setup and look around for a setting for the "internal catch", it has to be disabled for wiz7 to run properly; but slows computer down too much for other things, so i change mine back and forth as needed. never needed the patch with this method. email me if you need more help. packrhatt@yahoo.com
