If you have a shield and you decide to parry, one of the options available to you is "Block". I found that the greater the shield skill, the greater the chance that an enemy's attack may be "blocked".
I noticed in Wiz 6 that you could increase your shield skill by "Blocking" attacks from enemies. Not sure if this is true in Wiz 7.
