"Thinking of starting a new wizardry game online."

I was thinking of starting a new wizardry or wizardry like game. I have a bit of time and am a programmer by trade. I want to make an online version that features the same movement style and features of Wizardry 7. CoDS is the game I have played the most, but I have played them ever since I was a kid.
I can create almost all the programming, but I was looking for things like the story line, if we should follow the wizardry line or break off to something else. I also am looking for a bunch of graphics artist to contribute artwork.
I can start with a basic framework with a few monsters and then move from there. Think of it as a graphical mud. You should be able to interact with many of the other players that may be living on the game as well. I also plan on letting those that reach certain achievements to be able to create more quests and achievements to make things infinitely expandable. I have the hosting space for it and I am excited to move things forward if I can get people to contribute. Spread the word to other forums that you think may like this as well. Best regards.

Any progress on this? What language are you using? I would be willing to help in both programming and graphics. (even a few sounds)

A little. I have created the collision detection and map movements. I can also create maps and move around them in an over head view. I am still interested in do this project. So if you have some previous work I would love to see it. (:

This sounds awesome, what languages/DB are you doing the work in? Anything I can do to help? I might be able to do the graphics/images for the monsters if you like. I have great software for doing that.

If you have an example of what you were thinking can you post it here? Another area that is missing is the balance and rules for the game. Obviously that could get pretty complex.

Sony Entertainment picked up the series for a free MMO:

It has a kick butt intro movie, and stays in pretty good form to some original mechanics.

I just hate that Sony brought in their races / art style / piece-of-crap-controls-system

If there's one thing that you should NOT mess with in a Wizardry game, it's the Race/Class formula. That's the one thing that gives that game it's incredible replay-ability and made it a standing legacy. But then to butcher the keyboard shortcuts and not make them customize-able made me not able to stick with it (have they learned nothing from WoW?).

I was happy to see it's legacy continue but am pretty disappointed in the final execution.

I would rather play the original intention of this thread which was to keep the 6 member party turn-based format but in an online setting. Has this gotten anywhere?

Your post makes me think I am not missing out on too much, by having not found a good sized chunk of time to devote to learning the controls to play this game ... yet. Maybe Labor Day weekend ...
