"Installing with Dosbox"
Posted by Fading Twilight on May-18-08 at 07:00 PM
I've recently gotten an itch to play Bane again, and have downloaded Dosbox. However, how do I install it?I have my 3 1/2" or whatever disks A and B for Bane, and have also copied all of the information onto my hard drive, but when I try to run Winstall, it tells me to insert disk B into drive A, and I can't seem to figure out how to get it to run with Dosbox. Anyone have ideas or instructions?

Don't know about installing, but you could get an usable copy of the game from the various abandonware sites (with a clear consciousness...).

Where could I find one, and how would I then install it using Dosbox or some such?

You could google for the abandonware sites. Then you would download packed files. I replaced my old copy of Master of Magic that way. It needed just unpacking into an appropriate folder. I guess these files are modified so that you don't need to install them. Then you would use Dosbox for playing the game. I still can't use Dosbox very well, but I think it isn't meant for installing, but running the old programs.PS. I must have meant "conscience" in my first post...
PPS. Here's information on Dosbox:

What would I google for, exactly? I've already downloaded and installed Dosbox, as I saw it recommended for getting Bane to run in other threads.

LAST EDITED ON May-21-08 AT 02:37 AM (Pacific)"Abandonware" should do the trick. (Edit: Adding "bane wizardry 6" gave nice results. - Without the quotation marks, of course.)

Install DOS-Box (do not start it yet)Create a folder for the game (c:\bane for example)
Open the Dos-Box Config-File with Editor
At the end of file add these lines:
MOUNT A A:
MOUNT C C:
C:
CD BANE
PLAYBANE
Put Installation Disk One in Drive A
Start DOS-Box (Dos Box starts, sets up the drives and tries to start bane, which is not there yet).
Enter A: (Return)
Enter Install (Return)
Follow Instructions.
Enter Exit (Return)
The installation is now finished. When starting DOS-Box Bane will start automatically. Enjoy.

I followed these instructions:http://www.abandonia.com/vbullet/showthread.php?t=14406
Now Dosbox starts Norton Commander, and there I can choose from the menu any one of the old games I have installed.

Perhaps this is of some interest:My PC crashed from time to time when exiting DOSBox in Fullscreen Mode. So I played in Window mode. I set a large window size and enabled 2x scaling. Well, large window opens for DOSBox, but when I start the game the window resizes to a little one. Very annoying, always having to chance resolution before playing.
Well, the solution is rather easy. Change OUTPUT=SURFACE to OUTPUT=OVERLAY and the window no longer resizes. No idea what this actually means, but it works fine.
