"Cosmic Forge Editor - help for an "old timer" for character generation"

Posted by martink on Aug-31-06 at 05:31 AM
I have, like many others (based on browsing again through this excellent forum) have returned to the earlier Wizardry versions. I've played CoDS at least a dozen times, and Wizardry VIII three times, the last time solo (a fairie ninja of course, and I remember well how long it took to train her very early on with those puny crabs before I could get past the rats and out of the monastery! At the end though, the little lass could kick ass better than anything on the planet).

This has all been great fun of course and I've learnt a lot about character / party selection and development.

What I now want to do is to bring the same party starting in Bane through CoDS and to finish up in Wizardry VIII. I haven't played Bane before, and part of the attraction is that there seem to be some particularly nice items (e.g. diamond ring) that you can transfer with an imported party to W7, and part obviously is to travel with this group through these 3 great adventures.

Anyway, I digress and to the point - I'm a purist so I'm not into editing or character class changes (everyone to their own and perhaps I’m a bit old-fashioned) as they develop, but the one area I’m happy to compromise is in the area of character generation. I’ll do this for as long as it takes to roll the right character, and hence a little help is not inappropriate.

Having found the excellent Cosmic Forge Editor (thanks Mad God), it works well on Crusaders - characters with 25 or more bonus points are created often. However, when I run the program with Bane (change attribute bonus generation algorithm), I get the error “failed to open the file wpcmk.ovr”. Note that I specify the correct path and the program itself runs OK in terms of all the other functionality. My old Bane disk died (so I’m running on a downloaded version which itself also runs fine) and via DOSBOX 0.65.

Any help would be appreciated as I’m dying to start down that long road again …..

Make sure you have the last version of the editor. Check what kind of error appears when opening wpcmk.ovr.

I'm using v1.64 of Cosmic Forge, and the error is "details: access is denied"

I'n none the wiser as Bane itself runs well (have started a game to check) and Cosmic Forge fires up and seems to work in terms of all other functionality. ?!?!?!?

Probably the file in question is read-only.
Remove read-only attribute from that file.

If you don't know how to do it, mail me and I'll elaborate.

Many thanks - I should've realised that when you unzip files and/or copy from CD-ROM, they come across as read-only. I've changed the attributes and now it works a treat. Rolled a fairie ninja (25 points) on my third attempt.

Thanks again and I must say your editor is one fine piece of work - forgeting editing or changing game data, the insights it provides on characters, monsters, items and even alliances is fantastic!

Be aware that it's not easily possible to have a single character party in Bane. The game will lock up when you approach fountains (or when drinking from them, I can't remember).
