My thief (level 12, I think) gained experience points and when he made a new level at the Inn, it said LOST under status. What happened?????

Disk error or game bug, perhaps. Level 12 is rather young to die of old age, but possible if you've been healing at the Inn (big no no). Short of hex editing you'll need to restore from your last backup of your character disk.Lost is the worst status a character can be in the game - it's what you become if you teleport into solid rock, for example - there is no remedy for lost characters.

I think a character can get lost if you use certain items, for example a ring that changes profession without loss of attributes. It only happens once in a while, though.
