if you have a level 13 cleric with say
9/9/9/7/5/3/1 cleric spells and you change him into a mage when he levels up does he get more cleric spells? IE go to 9/9/9/9/7/5/3??

I think you'll end up with more points as much as you can cast the number of spells in your group.

(That didn't sound right)

Ok, you have one 7th level spell point right now. Eventually you'll learn both spells and have at least one point for each of those spells. Can you get up to 9? I'm not sure... I've never done it before.

5/4/4/4/5/3/2/2 or something like that..strange..but thats what happened

For this question (and your next), you need to reread the
game manual, wherein All Is Explained. IE, stuff which is
explained rather obscurely to newbies in the manual suddenly
makes much more sense when you are an experienced adventurer.
As for why ... I think part of the game's effect is being
hit by things you hadn't expected. If you want a game that's
totally without surprises, there's PONG (;>)

actually I have read the manual quite a few times and have seen nothing in it any time about the number of spells kept during a proffession change.

Actually, it says in the Ultimate Wizardry Archive Manual under the Wiz 1 section that your character receives bonus spell points for being in a particular class. Ex: A cleric receives bonus spell points for his cleric spell book.
When you change to another class, your character loses those bonus points. As a result, when you change your cleric to a mage he loses all of his bonus points in his cleric book and can only have as many spell points as you have spells in that level. Don't worry though, your character will continue to learn all the spells in his cleric spellbook if he hasn't already.

You can't get your bonus spell points back, but you will get bonus points in your mage book.

1. If you change professions and you don't have all the spells on a level (I'm guessing you've got either Malikto or Kadorto when you change), you will always get every spell in the level.

2. If you are not in a profession that uses those spells, you will have exactly the number of spells that are in the level.

PROTIP: Try leveling a priest to @lvl. 13 or so, change him to a mage. Repeat process. Change to a Bishop. Watch as fun ensues. You'll gain spell numbers slowly, but eventually you'll have a basic bonus priest/mage character that can identify items.

You'll be fairly old (25-6), but if you have Wizardry 2, you can transfer the character to that scenario and - if you find a few Stones of Youth - make him 19 again.
