"Question on enemies"
Posted by dfgdfg (Guest) on Nov-20-01 at 07:50 AM
My party has tried to take on the breeding rats, and they get hopelessly destroyed each time. Its not even close. So i figured id go level up, practice with my weapon skills and so on. I did notice that the random battles in the game become more difficult as well, the enemies level is usually pretty close to your own. Anyway, if i go and level up and increase my skills do enemies like the breeder rats also increase there power like the randomly encountered enemies do? Also any tactics on how you defeated the breeders would be cool. My party is all around lvl 8 and consists of a fighter, samurai, rogue, ranger, priest, mage, and 2 rpc's a rogue and valkyrie. The mages spells are rather low level.
I noticed a chart/list/table or something got posted that llisted what your skills had to be in order to learn spells, is that on a website, or can someone point me in the direction of the post. Thanks for any and all help!

With a little luck, I beat this battle on the first try. I have a Samurai, a Lord, a Gadgeteer, a Bard, a Mage, and a Priest, with a Rogue (Myles) and Valkyrie (Vi) as RPCs.The Bard used the Siren's Wail on the breeders and one went insane. The samurai got a critical hit on the second breeder and killed it instantly. The first breeder, still insane blocked the door and the reinforcements could not help. It mostly wasted rounds dancing wildly or bubbling and frothing and was easily taken down. The rest of the encounter was handled normally (a group of Rattkin Archers).
My advice would be to try and get some scrolls which either enhance your group (like Haste or Enchanted Blade) or hinder the monsters (like Slow, Armormelt).

Here is my suggestion on battling large groups of non-magic enemies (i.e. Rats, Spiders, etc):When you first see them and before you go into combat mode try to position your part in a doorway. That way you have your better characters in the front line and they can take more damage and the enemies cannot surround you and take out your rear characters.
Then make sure your non front line characters have ranged weapons.

Guardian angel is a very useful spell. It will keep your characters from being poisoned while in effect. If you still have trouble, try opening the door from the side, use hypnotic lure, then cast an area spell in the doorway to "strike the first blow"

I got throughly wiped out the first time I cracked open that door. A couple whomps with those overly large axes adn I was diced and sliced. With that party, I had to return when my front two could take the damage, my middle to deal out enough damage, adn back two keep everyone safe.
Later on, with a different party, I found cracking the door open from the side, using every mentally and physically dehabilitaing effect I could, adding a few elementals to my side of the fight and, throwing a hypnotic lure behind them, making at least one insane or turncoat, ..... made it all very easy

Wow i went back for a second time and whooped them! Before my fighter was kinda just OK, now he turned into a monster killing machine. He gets 2 attacks per round and eack of those attacks is between 2-4 swings, each swing doing between 25-35 damage. So he is avg well over 100 damage/ round. The rest of my party combined doesnt do that. Anyway i opened that door up just a little bit and then one of the breeder guys blocked it off for the rest of his buddies and i got to fight them one at a time. One of the kills was "INSTANT KILL" by my ranger too. The battle turned out to be the exact opposite of the first one. I think my fighter got all of a sudden better when i equiped the "bloodlust" (i think thats it) sword on him.

Your fighter's skills also got better. I noticed the same thing. Weapons improvements were helping the damage per swing, yes, but when those skills kicked in and I started getting those multiple salvos of attacks, party effectiveness *really* kicked up.

I died about half a dozen times before I figured out what to do. I used my Priest and Vi to cast paralyze on both of the Breeders. If you can hit the one that blocks the door with paralyze/web/something, the rest of the battle is academic (just make sure you paralyze the "back" one before you kill the front one). The archers are annoying, but are most definitely NOT your primary concern. My level 10 "supermanned" fighter died the first round fighting these guys, so having your fighters up front does nothing but get your fighters killed if the paralyze spell doesn't hit.

That spell (or potion) along with razor cloak offer a bit of help to the frontliners (and there are always frontliners - just gotta make sure they don't become flatliners

I find flash powder, fairy dust, the flash spell useful as they often cause numerous enemies to retreat for a while.
