"keyboard shortcuts"
Posted by carpal (Guest) on Aug-15-03 at 10:05 AM
I've been hopelessly hooked on wizardry for a long time now, and the mousing around is starting to get me down. Does anyone have a complete list of keyboard shortcuts? So far I have found the following:(main screen)
`(tilde) = start/end combat
Numbers 1-8 = Character selection
w = switch primary/secondary weapon sets
u = use item
s = search
m = magic
(combat mode only)
a = attack
d = defend
(inventory screen only)
m = merge ?
ctrl = display all item names (this one's really useful!)

Here is an exciting idea. You could read the manual. It
gives all of the keyboard mapping. Also, you could try going
into options->keyboard and look at the mapping and change it
if you want.

Sorry... I didn't mean to waste your time.I'm wondering is if there are other unlisted shortcuts that people have found. Like the ctrl key showing item names in inventory mode. Or once you've pressed m for magic, is there a way to pick a spell and power level from the keyboard?

... we tend to learn enough to do the job (about 20%). Once we master that, we start to look for the easier ways to do things. Another nifty feature is the CTRL key during combat ... freezes action, so you can target very modile targets, such as bats, easier.I have to confess, I had the same thought as Nomad and figured most (or all) of the keyboard shortcuts were in the manual. I think the CTRL key to show all items was a late addition, which could be why it did not make it into the manual.
One other thing I missed in the manual, that someone on the board clued me into (rbrown I think) was that you can raise and lower the cone rod for targeting radius spells, by right-clicking ... more cool than it is useful (most of the time).

I do remember telling someone. I asked Linda Currie when I was playing the demo how to do that. I ended up in a fight right near the top of the entry ramp and was having trouble targeting a fireball spell. don't know who I told, but this was the only Wiz 8 forum I was on at the time.

Hear here.I went over to Avenstar's page and found this "Power Bishop" posting that sounded like a cool cheat so I've been trying it out. For eight hours I've been casting Charm at Burz and I still have only 79 Psionic pts. (99 mental)
Now this guy in the article says he gets up to 90 Psionic in an hour, and then goes to the bank vault and does the same thing for the Alchemy/Earth with Knock-Knock. In an hour! I don't believe it. He's got to be high on crank.
Or am I doing something wrong?
Possibles:
1)I've noted his working up to this "charming" session with Burz had me with more in Alchemy (for later use in the bank vault), than Wizardry. Thinking I can kill two birds with one stone, I've been casting Light whenever it goes out. Is that interfering with the frequency of my point gains in the Charm castings? Side note on the aforementioned Alchemy over Wizardry thing, if Light isn't interfering wouldn't it be better to have Wizardry be higher so I could be buffing up on THAT instead of the Alchemy which I'm going to be doing later at the bank vault with the pure Alc/Earth spell Knock-Knock?
2)Is there a tweak I'm not aware of? One that gives me some points more frequently? I'm getting one point for every ten times I rest. Occasionally I get two, one for each.(PSI & MEN)
3)And lastly, the reason I've put this posting on this thread. Is there some kind of keyboard shortcut or routine that this guy is using to hum through to 90 points in a school of magic in an hour?
Thanks guys.

Is your "power bishop" the same race as the one he used? Are your skill points allocated the same as his?Also, Knock-Knock is also a Mage spell, so if you have maxed alchemy, you won't be casting using Wizardry.
Maybe he had a faster computer?

Thanks Llevram,
1)No,I'm not.(he's human)
2)No, but they're as close as I can get them along the same lines.
3)I'm griping about the charm casting.
4)Mines a Pent4 2.6 GHz 512 Meg NVidia GEForce4 WinXP.Good enough
My point is (since there doesn't appear to be any shortcuts other than the {escape} out of dialogue) that this guys brag about buffing up in PSI/Mental in an hour can't possibly be true.
A word about the race/stats issue; I've run the scenario again this time with a monk who's going to be buffing up some at the same time. This time I ran the bishop up to level 6 and INT is higher than this guys bishop is. I noticed that up to about 40-50 PSI the points gains seem to be every rest and a half but after that they start to tail off to every 4 or 5 rests. It still took me about eight solid hours of mousing from one side of the screen to the other to buff the bishop to 81 PSI with 90+ in Mental. (can't see running him any higher than that, got 12 more level ups before he can even learn those spells anyway) Perhaps Faeries or Elves learn faster at a given level of INT? I'm not aware of any info on this. Faeries have fast mana, is that adding to the learning curve?
And about the Knock-Knock. Went much faster, Got that up to 80 ALC with 100 Earth in about 90 min. (less mousing) Same pattern though, learn fast up to 50 ALC (15 min) then, much slower.
Oh, and I've tried casting higher levels rather than level one and it doesn't speed things up at all. If anything it slows it down. I think maybe it does have to do with successful castings.

It may be possible to do it an hour either ... I tried it (male faerie bishop), but running through things as fast as I could, I got to Burz at level 2 (you are supposed to be 3). Had I been level 3 and a Bishop, and done more of the monastery, the bishop (who had cast all of 3 or 4 spells before metting Burz), could have learned Terror and met up with Burz with more than the 10 points of Mental he had.As it was, it took me about 1 minute (real time) per point of level up. I imagine if I was at level 3, I could have been casting at more power, and had more mana, it could be done in "about an hour" .... I guess we need to define "about".
Of course, if you have decided you are going to sit in front of the monitor until you level up to the maximum ... you are not me ... it was too boring ... charm, camp, charm, camp, charm, .... I know a way to do it in a matter of seconds (edit) ... But, I'd rather play.

Are you saying you did this as a Mage?I'm thinking, duh! I've never played Wiz8 with a mage yet but I can recall playing Wiz7 with them and Mage's 'pointed-up' faster in that game. Maybe you can do this in an hour as a mage, but I can't do it in two as a Bishop. I'll have to try it as a mage.
BTW, I'm having a lot of fun with this one though; SAM, MON, NIN, BAR, BIS & GAD. I'm running the Bard and Gadgeteer as females and giving them level up points in STR, PIE & VIT only for the stamina and they are doing fine. Just keep one of them doing a heal-all every turn for the tough battles just in case as they are very slow.
Thanks

That I cut a few corners by not doing all of the monastery ... I did as little as possible. So, following the guide, I switched to Mage at level 2, but met Burz before I hit level 3, where you are supposed to switch back to Bishop.I think it all boils down to your meaning of "about an hour". I figure playing the whole monastery, casting as many spells as you can in the Mental realm, you can meet Burz with probably about 20 points in Mental. At about a point a minute increase, it should atake (from that point) about an hour and 20 minutes .. or "about an hour".
