Depends on what you want to do.

Lizards aren't very good with magic regeneration, but they make a surprisingly good bard if you boost their intelligence.

Fairies aren't weapons-and-armor friendly, except for one profession and one weapon. The best weapon in the game. Which only fairies can use.

Mooks can use the only extended range sword in the game.

The characters that SirTech provided with the game are generally race-suited to their profession. Use that as a guide.

If I might say about fairies: I've used them for samuris, monks, bards, priests, mages and bishops- and of course, the rightly feared fairy ninja. Dracons make great valkyries or fighters, felpurrs are great samuri or bards, gnomes and hobbits are interchangable as either bishops or bards (can you tell I kind of like bards?). Experiment with all of the races Pelo, you might find some new favorites (Lizardman bard? I might have to try that)>

You should probably start with;for a fighter, a dracon or lizard man, for mage, elf or faerie.
a phelper rouge
a gnome bishop
a rewalf lord
and a mook ranger
those are the things you realy need
