I can't seem to use the king's key to unlock the cave door... Any suggestions? Am I just not clicking in the right place?

Probably not. This keyhole is finicky like others in the game. Move closer, check for hand, then key that spot. Keep trying.

By the way, this King's key you refer to is the key you get when you kill him at the away camp I hope.
