"NPC Strategy"
Posted by Guest on Apr-11-03 at 11:39 AM
My party is Liz-Fighter, Fel-Samurai, Hum-Monk, Mook-Bard, Elf-Bishop, and Hobbit-Gadgeteer. My first game was the same party, except I had a Hobbit-Ranger who was great. I have 3 questions:
1) Should I train Gadgeteer with bow? His shooting rate value always stinks. I was hoping at near end of game when got better stones it would really be great, right now impall stones are about at best, 1 to 8 in hits.
2) To build up Vi, what is best route to go? Skills and magic?
3) To build up RSF-81, what is best route to go with skills?
Thanks for reply.

1) I wouldn't train a gadgeteer with bows. His omnigun is pretty good, especially later on in the game.

I might swap out your human monk for something else, if you are going to get RFS-81 ... though a human monk will actually get the psionic spell ... so maybe go with a pure psionic instead. How to build Vi shoudl be answered by "what does your party most lack". If you bishop does not train in Divine spells, then she can fill that gap ... otherwise, I would focus on more combat.
Same kind of thing for RFS-81 ... if he is a front row character, then Hands & Feet ... back or middle rows, better to train in staff/pole, to get more reach. Throwing is always good, especially when you get the boomerang shuriken.

I'd advise you to train the gadgeteer in modern weapon...not only better stones make more damage, but the omnigun gets in late game some really nice attachments... but I dont want to say too much
I would train RFS in wand and staff, because you seem to have already 3 frontfighters ,that makes a third one rather useless in my experince because he'll get a less number of enemys to fight and finally ends with an leck of skill.

You leave the front spot open and use the left, center, and right positions for your frontline characters. Then you just put the ranged/magic characters in the rear. I had six melee characters in my "front row" with my two bishops in the the rear. Enemies in front of the party do not last long.

You can use the "bow tie" formation and put everyone (6 in your party plus 2 NPCs) in the left, middle and right sectors ... this will give you 8 that can melle a group directly in front of you. If the target is in front of you, but towards one side or the other, then usually (and depending on weapons) 5 or 6 can still reach ther target. Tools for Wizardry(r) 7

Just some other ideas on formation...The formation that I am running right now with 2 Fighters and 4 Bishops is 2 front, 2 middle, and 2 back (vertical bow tie?). When I want the Bishops to have a little melee action, I turn the party 90 degrees to create my extended front line.
I think playing with the extended front line is a blast as all of your characters can hit at short range.

I have done that and think is best. I'm going through game for 2nd time, not to see how fast, or great my party can kick ass, but to fully experience the proper party; the way the game wants you to enjoy it. I would like to change my monk and sam at this point. I'd like to change monk to ninja, for alchemy, but unsure of Sam, or maybe keep Sam for quick kills? Thanks for reply - thats one thing great about game; it keeps people discussing it.

I'm sorry, but my above remark was meant to reply to Lievram.

I choose not to go with NPC's as they take exp. points away from your main char. (not much but..) and they leave you in certain places in the game.Vi would be about the only one I would accept into the party as she has somewhat of a role to play later. With her I build up her polearm and modern weapon skills.

i have found a great use for npc's i use them for amo storage i always buy all the ranged amo the venders have and use it to train my ranged skills and the amo gets fairly heavy well i found senceall my charactors have 100 stelth the npcs die so quickly its sad so i reserect them when i go shopping load all my heavyest amo onto them witch adds up to 500!!! if its all stones and drag the dead charactors around the only downfall is that u have your pc's experss their gief after every battle

I also use this stratagy your charactors do complain allot.
An added bonus is that they do not leach experance.
