Which bagpipes are you looking for? There are more than one of them. Did you get a set in the demo? They are in a different place in the game.

sounds like he is looking for the Piercing Pipes, which cast Shrill Sound. Bard level 3, music 20 I believe.
Searching places you've been, via a Ranger and Auto Search, should yield some insight. you may even find a few spellbooks lying around.

I believe are in the Battering Hogar cave, in the Northern Wilderness (along with a lot of other goodies).

I found them on the Arnika Road. From the monastery, I took the first south fork in the road to where the bandits were.

I believe the Hogar Cave in the Northern Wilderness has the Banshee Howl not the Piercing Pipes.

In the demo the pipes are in the lower monastery in the game where gator said. He is also right about the howl. The chaos drone is in the gazebo in the SE wilderness

The Demo can't go that far. it features only the lower Monestary, and has Burz up on the cliff, near the chest.
I recall it being in the room behind the gate, which did get irritating when my characters complained about the monsters, until I went around, picked the lock, and conquered them.
If it's not in that room, in the Demo, it's before it, as I mistakenly went upstairs, and used the Pipes, but got creamed anyway.
also, a minor spoiler, in the real game, it's a Giant Spider. in the Demo, it's something else, a Giant Lizard Creature, who eats characters, whose real name I cannot recall. I just remember it being a pain to off it. Berserk helps.

In the demo the pipes were in one of the two cells. In the game they are on Arnika road. Inthe monastery you will find the angels tongue. The monster in the demo was a swallower.

Oh, so that's where it was
and, D'oh, why couldn't I remember, the obvious Swallower?
curious, is the Swallower in the full version of Wizardry 8?

And not just one variety, as is the case with most (or all) monsters.

cool. I'd like to fight one with my own party. maybe even whole heards of them.
only thing I want to know, is how the heck it got in the monestary up there? It barely fits into the hallways. must have came from over the hill near Burz, and made it's home in that room.

.. one of the monks, thought it would make a nice pet as a Nibbler (the lesser versions you can find), and it grew up into swallower (probably swallowing the monk as well )

To be more precise, when walking through the "canyon" just outside the monastery that leads to the locked building and the Arnika-Road, you'll come - half way through the canyon - to a place where the path splits. Take the road south here. It is a dead end, but there you'll find, among other nice goodies, the piercing pipes.

I've made note in other posts that there are enough bard instruments to equip at least 2 bards. Bard instruments can cast some heavy duty spells such as pandamonium, heal all, nuclear blast, silence, restoration, cerealbol hemoragh(?), banish (import party with horn of cornu), soul shield, magic screen, etc. the gadgeteer can make things that duplicate asphixciation, earthquake, quicksand, superman, guardian angel, armorplate, eye for an eye, instant death,, terror, and the fabulous triple shot crossbow (I ususally give this to my bard or ranger, then arm them with lightning bolts. Hoo ra!). With the right weapons they can melee in a pinch, but play to their strengths: long distance death and chaos.
