I think it can only be a plain Longsword. Tools for Wizardry(r) 7

Correct longsword don't go into the dungeun unless you 1 Heve hi-level locks and traps skill 2 have moderate locks and traps plus knock-knock spell scroll or artifacr or 3 set portal return to portal spell with a portal already set elsewhere. If you don't I hope you like going to a previous save or living in the dungeon you're going to be in there a long long time.

And be sure to have a decent level, for there are some very tough fights down there. Lvl. 15 minimum, I would guess. Heal all, Element - & Soul Shield are very important, especially for the final fight, against a Lvl 28 - creature, 8 21's and one 16 (or so). I encountered my first Nuclear Blast in the first round of this Mega-Fight, before my Bishop was able to cast element shield. Ouch! But the reward was very nice! My Bishop (yes, she survived the Nuclear Blast...) was very delighted when I gave it to her...

How about the stone in the Northern Wild? It's near the bad guys ruins. What should I use on that stone?

That one needs a short staff.

I've used the short staff on the rock, but I can't find where to go. Is there an entrance somewhere to another place that is opened when I use the short staff?

Look around for a patch of mushrooms that wasn't there before.

Where can I get a short staff? When I needed a sword for the runes in the Mountain Wilderness, I teleported back to Arnika, then went to Arnika Road to battle the guys there until I got one. I set a portal in the Mountain Wilderness so I could get back and it worked. I had a great time down there. This is my second game and for some reason during the first one, when I tried that, it would not work, maybe because I saved after I lit the runes, I'm not sure. I have gone to the cemetary dungeon twice and now I have this one last dungeon to go to. I'm about to go to Ascention Peak right now, but might take a side trip back to the last dungeon just for fun. I just can't find a short staff anywhere. I'm thinking the guys on Arnika Road might drop them. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Qualia

(took a while to find this ... not sure why the chest lists don't show up on a google search)Avenstar's site has a lot of useful info: http://www.geocities.com/shau185/index.html
Anyhow, a "Trang regular" chest has a chance of a short staff. As does "Swamp regular" chest. Killing a "Trang Regular" also has a chance of dropping a short staff (amongst other loot).
Another alternative is to recycle one of your characters in to an alchemist and buy the starting equipment (which is guaranteed to include a short staff).

I tested this a while back, and you can get a short staff from Antone fairly quickly (a little longer if playing ironman mode). Here is what you do:1. Go to Arnika
2. Rest three complete times (24 hours)
3. Quick Save (Q on keyboard)
4. Talk to Antone to see if he has the Short Staff; if he does you are done
5. Reload Quick Save (Shift-Q on keyboard) and go to 4
I cannot remember the exact results, but it loaded approximately "1 in 4" or "1 in 5" times. I tested it with a low level party and a high level party, and it did not make much difference.

"Who sells what" (and optionally when). I suppose it is the optional "when" part that makes that list hard to break down.

I know of two situations where the "when" is important. At Crock's your average party level has to be level 11 to be able to generate level 4 spellbooks in his inventory list (most everyone knows this).
The other is at Sadok's, but I have not investigated this fully. Numerous people have said that they have been able to buy a Book of Light from Sadok, but I never have even with buying complete sets of books for 4 Bishops (around 20 complete sleep cycles). IIRC, I was level 10 at the time. So there seems to be a level dependcy there too. If anyone has more information about this, I would like to know.
Someone probably could generate lists for each vendor through many reloads/buying out inventory/sleep cycles at various levels, but that is not a task I would like to do as it would take a long time.
I just happened (remembered that is) to know that Antone sold it. I believe some other vendors do also, but cannot remember which ones. Anyway, that is the quickest way I have found to obtain the staff.

I spent a few hours at Martens Bluff wandering around, used the XRay to find the T'Rang and fought every one I could find. This didn't produce a short staff so I went to Arnika to do the 3 camp cycles. Antone told me to come back later and that he had business to attend to. Crock and Sadok are dead so I can't get one from them. (I'm just a killing machine, methinks! lol). I wandered around the swamp killing anything in sight. I got frustrated and left the game. I usually play in the morning since I have some things to do in the afternoon/evening. I didn't try to change any of my characters because I was afraid that would lower their level and I might lose something. That might be a last resort for me, I'm not one to give up.
Thanks for the help and I'm headed back now.

Wow! I've never even tried to p!ss off Antone. How did you do that? Pickpocketing him?I am assuming that he is yellow right now, and not green. Have you tried making him green again by giving him something so that you can buy from again?

He's not mad at me, he's still friendly, just annoyed that I'm bugging him. lol I did go back to Lower Marten's Bluff and fought some more T'Rang and guess what? I am now in possession of a short staff! Woo!I used the T'Rang teleporter to get to the Northern Wilderness, I found one stone to touch but I have that weird patch that messes up the text and it says something about... shoot, I forgot, but I think it has to do with the Shaman in Trynton.
I just came back to find out where the heck the runes are. I printed out a map of it a while back but something is not right. I think I read the runes are on the trees but I'm not sure. I thought I'd check this forum, then go back to the site where I found the maps.
Anyway, good news that I have the staff, I just have to figure out how to get to the runes. This is fun.

I found the site with the instructions to look for the runes on the trees. I think what I'll do now is go back, camp until it's dark, and give it another go. Here is the link to the instructions:

The runes for this dungeon are all located on the same type of tree. Go to the small island in the shallow lake towards the eastern end of the map. Gather the treasures and search the tree. The rest of the runes (6 total) are more or less in a straight line west of the tree on the island. Once you've touched them all, find the stone by the well. You know you have the right one when the hand icon appears. Use the short staff on stone and look a few feet away. A ring of mushrooms should now have appeared. Save before entering, and save under a different save game name once you enter into the dungeon. If I'm not mistaken the trynnie ghosts and the Baron Englund spectre are in the final mushroom patch room that leads from the dungeon. A tough fight if your not ready. Be warned and good luck.

Just as a follow up, I did make it to that last dungeon. The battles weren't very hard but of course that's because I am at a higher level. I think I'll finish off the game and start another one today. The one last thing I have to do is get that tracking device from Z'Ant and shoot down the dark ship.Wintersteele, Baron Englund is in the cemetary dungeon right before you exit there. He's a hard nut to crack!
