I know that killing Don Barlone gives you the cane of corpus, but I was wondering if you can pickpocket it from him instead? If you can, how high would your pickpocket skill need to be?

I couldn't do it that way.

I just bought an item from him that causes a death cloud when thrown. Initiated battle, used it and killed him on the first round. The CoC was in the bag.

Since the Rattkin become hostile anyway when you kill the breeders, I didn't see a reason to try to be nice to Barlone either.

You can PP it from him but you will have to have a very high PP level, like 120 or so. The Rattkin Razuka will not be hostile after killing the breeders, only the Rattkin Common will be.

They tend to be harder for me, because of their numbers (and hit points) ... I always tend to find a nice door way and try an minimize my exposed front

Try to run to the Don's residence and get to him. He will kill everything that disturbs his presence and there is no group of common rats that can kill him
