my gadgeteer is not making anyting. Is he supposed to do this automatically, or do I need to make him build stuff? Also, what do I need to fix the bridge in Trynton? I found a couple of short vines, but they do not work.

You have to tell him to. In his inventory screen, at the bottom on the left, you will find a "merge" button. Try practicing on the two short vines. Have fun, there are lots of cool gadgets you can make when you have found the right components.
