"Rapax Assassin"
Posted by ASL Veteran on Dec-13-02 at 10:27 AM
Okay, I am at my wit's end. This is the first time I've checked various forums for assistance. I found Z'ant down below ... handed him the Umpani Flag (had it with me already) .... he then tells me to kill the Rapax Assassin. I hand him the perfume (had it with me already) and he tells me to keep it. Okay, so I finally muck around the castle in total confusion about what to do with the perfume until I finally get the catapult to work and walk into the castle. I get the dummy to come down into the room with the elevator that goes down to the T'Rang area and I put the perfume on the dummy. Raven Rapax shows up and I prepare to kill him .... only I can't!!! I click on the sword for combat to begin and he is always out of range and combat ends!! I get a mouth when I click over him and he tells me "I won't kill you yet, I save the easiest for last! Tell the T'Rang leader that he is marked!"I go down and tell Z'ant that he is marked, but all he says is that the watchers are always guarding or something. Nothing I do or say seems to get me out of this situation where the Rapax assassin is standing in the room with the dummy and I can't kill him. I am completely baffled right now.

If you are close enough to talk to him, you should be close enough to kill him. After clicking the sword icon to start combat, you probably need to click on one of your characters, select their attack, then click on Raven. If he is out of range, then try a spell attack.Another way of killing him is by locking him in the room and throwing the lever to squish him. I think you get more Exp pts that way.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-02 AT 04:46 PM (Pacific) by Llevram (admin)Yeah, I'm definitely close enough to him. All my weapons show red though and after I click the sword, combat immediately ends and normal time returns before any attacks take place. The assassin is also yellow (neutral) not red (hostile) on the radar map. I also can't use the lever because the lever doesn't seem to want to get pushed the other way after getting the dummy to go down (I tried for a while to get the hand symbol over the lever just after pushing it the first time since I didn't know what happened at first - I always like to map everything before pushing any levers. The hand never came back on. Of course, the Rapax wasn't in the room at the time so maybe that's why the lever wouldn't work). Maybe I will try the lever again later though. I haven't gone into the mines yet and there seems to be a lot of areas that I can't explore by just walking through the front door at Martin's Bluff.

All icons show red, which notes you are not targeting anyone. That was why I said in my previous post, click on your character, then click on the Raven ... that will target him and turn your icon from red to white (it is a safety mechanism, so you don't accifentally target friendly/neutral characters). When all icons are red and you start the round, there is no target, so combat ends. There is a second lever or switch, I think to the right of the dummy lever, that operates the squishing.

Hmmmm, well I think I did attempt to manually target Raven Rapax earlier but my character said "Sugar, it's just too far" or some such. Maybe I didn't though, I don't remember exactly. I will give it another try ... thing is I always lose Myles when I go to Martin's Bluff and the Umpani bard won't go either so I have to plan my return around what I have planned to accomplish (maybe the Trynnie Gadgeteer will go?). I was going to see what happens if I give The Don the fake Astral Dominae, but the last time I tried I had to slaughter a whole horde of Rattkin Goons, Sharpshooters, and a few Sprites in one titanic battle that lasted several hours of 'real life time' (outnumbered more than three to one!). I was too physically exhausted to continue after that, so I went to Martin's Bluff instead.
Thanks for the tips!
By the way, how do I get into that church thing at Trynton (at least I think it's a church)? There is some kind of a stump or something in front of this door where something has to be placed .... I tried the Sacred Tome among other things, but nothing seems to work. Damn this game is addicting!

Re: the thing in trynton, ask Fuzzfas about the seventh bough.Re: targeting, if one character says "too far" ("sugar" ... that is my favortie personality), just hold shift and click ... that will command all characters to target the same spot/monster.

you have to use the lever to crush the rapax when he is in that chamber. i do it always that way, never tried to melee him and when i look at what you write id say that its prolly impossible to kill him with melee.PS:
you dont have to lose your recruited npcs if you go to a special area, just get them unconcious by running or anyhow else and they will go to that zone (but get a skill penalty while they are in there )

As things turned out ... I did eventually find the various buttons to push to squish him, but I saw that the Rapax in my 'relationships' thing in the journal are listed as neutral. The Rapax common are hostile, but the 'upper' Rapax are neutral. Since I figured I would have to go to the Rapax castle eventually I figured I would let the Assassin stand stupidly in the chamber until I finished doing whatever it is that I have to do with the Rapax, then kill him later.Incidentally, I finally acquired the Helm of Serenity but I'm a little nervous about going up to fight the water creatures and find Marten since they gave me some problems on the beach in the swamp a while back. I was going to see if I could get a dagger and try to find the wierd dungeon thing at the graveyard first. I clicked four runes on the headstones and I figured I would just pick up a dagger from Arnika and see if I could make this dungeon appear. Well nobody seems to have any daggers in stock ... anywhere!! I was so desperate to get a dagger that I went back to the Monastery to see if that dude there (Bruza something or other?) has a dagger (He didn't have one either
). I entered the upper Monastery with X-Ray on and I saw a few items that seemed to be located somewhere above the computer room that you get to via the staircase you pass under to get to the lower Monastery. There doesn't seem to be any means of getting these items as the most likely route to where those items are located is via that passageway that is 'bricked over' where you activate the big bells. I'm thinking that there are some areas that I haven't explored in the Upper Monastery and I don't know how to access those areas. My Ranger is pretty high level (like 15 or 16?) and his scouting is in the 90% range so I'm thinking that he would spot any secret passages if any existed.
Can anybody give me a tip on accessing these areas of the Upper Monastery? Also, what do you do with the dagger in the graveyard? There don't appear to be any 'hot spots' where the hand appears. Do I just drop it somewhere or something?

There are six runes in the graveyard you need to touch, to activate teh hot spot .. there are a number of walkthroughs on the retro dungeons ... if you type in:
wizardry 8 retro dungeon
in a search enginie like google.com you should find them easily. If you sold off all your daggers, you might not not get another one ... they seem scarce once you need one.
There is nothing secret about the upper monastery, if it looks walled off, it is. There are no secret passages (too bad), if there is a door, there is a passge, else no passage.
Nothing has ever been discovered to work with the terminals in the monastery either.

"Where to find a dagger"

Well, to find a dagger i think the best thing is to go to a place plenty of higardi (for example monastery-Arnika road) and kill higardi (highwaymen, bandits, roustabouts, etc) till they drop a dagger (i think they drop them often).

Just check the device at both side of the dummy room.
go to the east side room and use control panel to lock the doors when the Rapax is in with dummy,
then go to west side room to pull the lever to active the trap wall. See the Rapax **squeeze** into a mud of meat.----(@_*)
