"SOLOing with a DWARF MONK Male"

Posted by Rogan (Guest) on Jul-05-02 at 09:14 AM
Hehe..
I know a Mook Ranger Female (necklaces of Stamina and such), Faerie Ninja with CoC or other character may be easier/better...

But I am working on a Dwarf Male Monk. Why?

Powerful Damage reduction from:
- MONK Class
- DWARF Race
- Eventually, from the VITALITY=100 Secret Skill

At level 11, still without maxed Vitality, I already got a 19% Damage Reduction.
I am dealing with Metal Slimes in the Monastery and having some problems with Stamina, of course.

I am pumping up his Vitality rating along with Dexterity and Speed and some Strength, at times. He is already dealing 2 strikes and 2 attacks.
I have been training Psionics to level 60 with Divine Trap and can use the Insanity Spell at max level. Maybe I will max it in Monastery, cause I tried to leave the Monastery and got decimated by a group of Bandits.

MY PLANS:

- Stay in Monastery and Max Stealth, (which I should have done, already)
- Also stay in Monastery and Max Martial Arts, Critical Strike (already at 60) and Psionics/Mental

Question: Do you think I can take on this game with this character? Should I mix with other classes to make him stronger? Any hints?

Thank you!!!

- - - UPDATE in 5th of JULY, 2002 - - -

My DWARF MALE MONK has been making great progress.
I got from level 14 to level 17 since I last posted here. I left the Monastery because - I don’t know why – some stupid and very weak enemies started to appear, even though Emerald and Flesheater Slimes also show up. My best fight in Monastery was against 4 Flesheater Slimes. Since I am soloing, I earned 241.000 Experience!!! : ) I am getting good experience in Arnika, but I may go back to the Monastery.

My character is like this:

DWARF MALE MONK
LEVEL 17
STR 72
INT 50
PIE 50
VIT 100 (finally)
DEX 71
SPD 58
SEN 55

HIT POINTS: 164 (Very good for a Monk at this level!) AC: 14
Close Combat-79 Martial Arts-108 (Monks got +25% here) Stealth-100 Psionics-78 Mental-94
And with Vitality=100 IronSkin-3 (just got it, put 3 points at level up)
Damage Resistance: When I was at level 16, it was still 22% (same value from level 14). When I got to level 17, some racial and class-based bonus took place again, plus I got 3 points in Ironskin. My Damage Resistance jumped from 22% to a very nice 29% !!! Now that’s the way I like it.
Also, Stamina has not troubled me so much, lately. I seem to be able to get through hard fights and not fall asleep.
And... I am dealing 2 Kick Attacks with 3 Swings each and 2 Punch attacks with 3 Swings each (at least as told in my status screen). Damage is at 9-26 (kick) 5-20 (punch). As for spells, they are working great, specially Haste (exclusive to the Psionics book). Problem is, I dont have any armorplate/enchanted blade/magic sceen buffs.. But I think I can make it!

Well, that was another update, I will keep you posted. I wait your comments!

And if anyone has experience playing a Dwarf Monk please let me know. If anyone has any hint or comment, please share your thoughts. If anyone knows if Damage Resistance has a cap, a maximum value, please let me know.

Thanks and good week!

Yes I agree, you can make it.

But your monk has low intelligence now:
When you deal with spiders and spell casters, you need to take precaution against paralyze, sleep, web and such spells. You need high intelligence against these spells, I guess.

I have a dwarf male monk in an import party from Wiz 7, so his advancement will be a little slower than yours, but I would say to start pumping up intelligence, dex and senses, as these all help with close combat, dual weapons, critical strikes and initiative.

Hi people,

My Dwarf Monk is at level 22 at this time. Cannot give details now, but he´s got Damage Resistance 37% right now (from 3 sources: dwarven, monk and Iron Skin). Hit Points are at 209.
AC=14 (no good items but stealth +10)

I have got Cerebral Hemorrhage, Mind Flay and another level 7 spell from saved spell buy points. They work very well. I earned like 4 levels in 1,5 hour by killing Androids in Arnika - especially lv 21 Slashers, each one gives me 186.000 experience points!!! The biggest exp award I got in one fight was 720.000, no kidding!!!

Well, I have Martial Arts at 115, doing 3 punch and 3 kick attacks, each with 3 swings. Is it the maximum? I am developing Speed and Dexterity and will eventually maximize them. After, I intend to maximize Strength and Senses. I don´t really think I will be putting points into Intelligence. I have read many Monk FAQs and hints, people never said to make the brawler more intelligent...

Take this good example: www.geocities.com\jandrall

Any other hints? I await your comments.

Go for it man. I was also thinking of a solo monk but decided on the ninja. Three reasons - Cane of Corpus, potion mixing ability (very handy when solo) and also ultimately the death cloud spell - most powerful spell in the game by a mile.

I have a Level 26 Faerie Ninja. Equiped with Cane of Corpus and spites Dagger (handy dagger 5-14 damage, Stamina +1.

I maxed intelligence first and worked on other attributes such as strength, dexterity and speed. High intelligence made for a quick learning magic user which was a must b4 the C of C was obtained.

I recently recruited Vi Domina to take advantage of all the priestly buffing spells plus identify item and remove curse spells. Vi is levelling up very quickly (encounters are being based on a level 26 character)- although had trouble keeping her alive initially. Vi can cast remove curse so I can unequip the Ninja and use the inate throwing skill plus other weapons. I just equip up the C of C for mega battles.

Speaking of which - gloroius victories include the SE Wilderness Church - thanks largely to a summoned fire elemental who punched out 1 Death Lord and 5 of those lesser sorcerers plus at least 4 summoned elementals. I did not have the Cane of Corpus then. My Ninja plus a second elemental took care of the Sorcerer queen and the 2nd Death Lord in about the 72 round. (Strategy hint - cast an elemental in front of your solo character when backing down a path - your character can stand behind the elemental and cast heal wounds at the elemental and other spells taht might seem appropriate - ie element shield etc, enemies cannot get past and at you.)

Also a battle with Vi whilst passing through the SE wilderness against 3 level 26 sorcerers an accompanying elemental plus 5 level 24 Swallowers was tough, even with the C of C.

I might recruit RFS 81 next. Part of the fun of Wiz is levelling up and developing characters and level ups are long way between drinks in the upper levels.

OK BUT:

The idea of soloing is not having any NPC's either. OR from the very beginning, you could start a 2-member party, right?

The only time I got the NPC (Vi) was to solve the kidnap situation.
Even that is not necessary, bec, you could the croc in the first place.

You are right

But it has become so obvious that a Solo Faerie Ninja will easily make it through, that I have added the NPC's for interest.

Having said that, the game was bloody tough to begin with, but after about level 15 it has become progressively easier.

Perhaps a man should play a solo Lizardman Bishop for a challenge......

on IronMan Mode. been done a few times
I think even harder would be a Psionic, as their spells are the ones most often resisted. which race, though?
You are only as brave as the challenges you take on

Even after level 15, I had hard time in Rapax rift, mountain wilderness and finally at the peak.

My solo dude was a female human ranger with minimal iron skin. I think the best approach is to have that iron skin in the first place.

I had difficulties till level 30 or so.

I am at level 22 with my Dwarf Monk, he surely is very strong but I was very pissed that I took a beating from 2 Geomancers and 1 Earth Elemental.

Do you know if there is a maximum level for enemies/mosnters? Or if I get to level 50 (maximum) with my Dwarf Monk, will they follow me as I level up?

there is an upper limit to monster levels, at least for the particular area (e.g. if you're level 50 and you go to the monestary, they may only be level 30, but go to Marten's Bluff, and you could very well face level 45 guys)
Exactly where that limit is? I know not.

There is none. The highest I have ever encountered: Armegazer: level 50. The closest to that is level 40 magma scorcher. I would love to see any other higher than these, please enlighten me.

One of the threads where you meantion the level 50 Armegazaer there is a post after about an edited Fairy ninja and some level 175 Frightmares. Un edited you are right level 50 is as high as you get.
