I found great success if you
can web or paralyze them immediately.
Have your magic users in the back,
and continually cast web and paralyze
spells even if they are affected, so that
if it wears off, they will be trapped again.
Meanwhile have your fighters in front hacking
away.

If that fails, RUN

If you have someone that can withstand a hit or two and a healer or two ... best way is to incapacitate them .. insane usually works for me, though they tend to run away when insane.

If you have a Gageteer in your party you might try using Duct Tape as this is a half decent parlize spell. (Available in Arnika at the shop by the wharf and some times Croc's in the swamp)
Have a nice day.

KILL a Hogar? As the Chairman of the Society for the Preservation of the Endangered Hogars (Earth Chapter) I must strongly protest this entire thread. There is NO NEED to kill the misunderstood Hogar, in any of its various species.

First of all, the Hogar is nearsighted but his hearing is good. So if you see one patrolling his/her territory on Arnika Road, stand to the right side and stand still. When it turns its back, move forward. When it turns, freeze. Don't even turn your head to see if it notices you because your loud clanking armor will reveal your hostile intent. When you reach the end of his marching path, just hold down the arrow key and walk away. He/she will not pursue.

Perhaps the most heinous and cruel sport on Guardia is cage-fighting, wherein a caged Hogar is attacked by a large well-armed party while innocently playing with his shiny objects. Again, a little thought and planning can avoid animal cruelty. IF you need to steal his shiny objects (leaving him bored and grumpy and alone in his cage, try the following procedure. Unlock the cage door EXCEPT for the last lock pin. Wait for the Hogar to pace away from the door. Click the last pin and, if it connects, hit the keypad 0 key to slide sideways to the LEFT so that you are not blocking the door. When combat commences, put everyone on guard except the people casting blinding flash or throwing flash powders. Use as many caster/throwers as you can. Once blinded, the Hogar will either flee deeper into his cage or out the door and down the path. In either case, quickly enter the cage, steal his toys and sneak out again. Enter the sprite cage, close the door either during combat or wait for the Hogar to disappear and combat to cease.

Now you are inside a cage and the Hogar is out. An unsafe situation? Not at all !! Lie down and take a well-deserved nap (or two). When you awaken the Hogar will be in his cage and grumpier than usual. Check the area for hostile creatures and when everything is quiet (no stupid Trynnies either), slip out carefully whispering "Nice Hogar, Good Bobo" in a soothing tone and slide carefully towards the Hogars door. Carefully reach the edge of the door and gently close it. You have achieved a cruely-free victory, and you will feel the lightness of being associated with giving coins to blind mice.

Has anyone else noticed that sprites and sorceresses don't get bloody as they take damage? Avoiding accusations of crimes against women ?

Good gracious...! I didn't know they are an endangered specie... And I killed the one in the Thrynnie tree (with the help of the Trynnie patrol... Now I get it... They were planning on making themselves a nice pot of Hogar stuw). Got a nice pair of shoes from his cage... Maybe I can sell them and send the money to the Society for the Preservation of the Endangered Hogars. If you leave the bank account number, I'll be happy to contribute.

I also slew them Sprites... nasty b**ches if you ask me (nice breasts though)... Don't feel much pain there...

Right... I'm off to the Umpami Base Camp... Got to get some flag for some cockroach named Z'ant... Hope this is worth it. Haven't met an Umpami yet, maybe I'll make friend with them.

They are so slow (and tough) that they keep attacking for another ten minutes after they died. But with a critter that slow (and stupid), walk away from it every round of combat and it'll soon forget who or what it is following, and wander off in another direction! You don't have to "run away", just walk backwards as far as the combat round lets you every time, and it is farther than a Hogar advances per round, as I recall (mostly, except for the one in the Trynnie Zoo, I avoided ever letting them see my party).

Dude-

You must be really ticked off about Hogar called Rex! He's a friendly chap, a green dot even! And the Rapax roast and eat him?!?!

Shall we make him the poster child for your organization?

I'm glad to hear of another good soul on the planet who tries to understand the often misunderstood creatures roaming the world!
Maybe one addition about how to steal Bobo's toys: As we all know, Hogars are huge creatures, which need lots of food, despite their seemingly lazy way of life. Hogars will greedily eat anything that is offered to them, even rancid meat (the trynnies seem not to care too much about the well-being of their pets!). Before dropping the meat (which can be found in abundant quantities nearby) into Bobo's cage, prepare it with fairie-dust. Bobo will eat it and fade away into a deep, but short slumber, so that the brave and quick adventurer can step into his cage, loot everything and be out, before he awakes!
And if you're a traveller through the worlds - the same tactic works for certain killer-dogs on a small carribean island called "Melee Island"

I tried the doped-meat trick and he wouldn't eat it. Even after I went to Rattkin Tree and Martens Bluff it was still spinning in his food trough.

I have tried it on four different occasions, only once has it ever worked for me (even after dropping up to 3 drugged meats in there ... I must have shown up just after feeding time).

When I killed that sprite and collected the resulting Fairie Dust, she must've been an abnormally tiny or non-fattening version, because the caged Hogar woke within a few seconds - long before the party was through pillaging his shiny baubles . .

... Save early, save often (Anyone remember Larry Laffer?)

It took me several tries, too, to get Bobo asleep, rush in, grab and rush out.

I don't like killing Hogars either, but it has alas been necessary at times. My question is a curious one: why does my elf samurai seem to have the Hogars' number? She has instant-killed, in the first round of combat, all six Hogars my party has come across (two in Northern Wilderness, three in Trynton, one on road just before Trynton), before my mage can even use the Freeze Flesh spell she's preparing to cast. So this means they're pretty much at full strength, all 400+ hp. In fact, I've noticed that the bigger and meaner the creature, the easier it is for her to IK it (she got Brekek, too), which really puzzles as, although she is L13 overall, she spent her first 7 levels as a Monk, with one IK then. So she is really a L6 samurai, with some similar skills left over from her days as a monk. She is not wearing or using any weapons or items that would give her an advantage in IK. I;m not complaining, but any ideas?

rise-to-the-occasion trait, she picked up when dual calssing from Monk to Samurai .... if there was such a thing

I have noticed that IKs tend to come more often for me when the odds are not in my favor ... maybe it is a game "balancing" tactic in the AI.
