am thinking of doing a reinstall to correct corruption problems
can i just copy my saves folder to desktop to protect it from being deleted during uninstall or would i have to save it to disc

As long as they are outside the Sirtech\Wizardry8 directories they should be safe. It doesn't hurt to make backups to a CD, or compress them into .ZIP files.
