In the upper caves of Mt. Gigas is an ID card reader which promptly breaks when you try to use it (as I understand it should). I can't get the back to open to fix the wires. I have tried approaching it from multiple directions with and without card. I am obviously missing something. Any subtle (or not so subtle) hint would be appreciated.

Try using a card on it again. The back should get blown off so you can fix the wires.
