"lances"

just posting this because im bored and i want some opinions but...my valk (now a fighter) and vi are kicking the living snot outta my fighter in damage and kills with their spears.fighter is dual-wielding a demonsbane sword and diamond eye. has full STR, full DEX, and near equal or higher SPD as the valks.
valks are using dread spears. one only has 75 str.
does anyone else find that their lancers are *dare i say* overpowered? i mean, im not complaining....but im sure as heck debating on making that fighter a dragoon.
spears definitely have better range, and seem to do just as much -if not MORE- damage than a high level/skill dual wielder with decent weapons. the fact that i can hit anyone within a few yards seems to negate any bonus of using 2 weapons.
im beginning to like the one guy that posted earlier's suggestion of a full (4) front line of dragoons more and more.

Vi doesn't do more than my fighter, but...She does have second highest kills, ahead of both my Samurai and Lord. This is a lot, given that you don't get her until later and I drag her through areas where her stats are all lowered because she doesn't tag along.
So yes, Spears and Valks are rather deadly. Plus they can cheat death (like when I fall from Trynton, everyone dies but Vi
)

Give you fighter a dread spear for comparison. There is a lengthy post elsewhere discussing how some extended weapons seem to be better than short rang weapons for reason other than range.

only prob with that, is that my fighter has like 10 skill with lances...will take a while to test it. might try it anyways. i think the major difference is caused by the range. the lancers just get the opponents before he does, since he has to get up close and personal while they can air-mail the business end of their weapons.

But I've given my Lord a Staff and Samurai a Bo (and pretty good ones at that), and they don't do nearly as well as Vi. I think Polearms do more damage... have you noticed that characters do different kinds of attacks (Bash, Stab, etc.)... maybe this affects it? All I know, Vi is a mean, lean, jiggly fighting machine

ok well range + damage capability
my point is that the lancers can attack opponents from afar, while my fighter has to wait until they're close enough to hit. so even if the fighter does more damage, the lancers get more opportunities to attack.
im pretty sure spears only have stab, don't they? i didnt really check. nor have i paid attention to which types do more damage. dnd games calculate damage type heavily into attacks...wasnt sure with wiz games since as ive said before...this is my first one.
and i think the most entertaining thing with vi is watching her get 3x attacked by a hogar. she dodges the first two, and gives that arrogant stupid laugh of hers, then gets gored on the last shot for 40 dmg. shuts her up REAL quick lol.

as a close second in entertaining-ness, i thoroughly enjoy watching RFS or my ninja do 6 hit combos on unconscious critters and saying "good!" or "right on!" (respectively) after every single hit. im easily amused

You may find that you get better damage when concentrating on just the primary skill weapon. If you are not proficient at dual wielding, it detracts from both. Tools for Wizardry(r) 7

Still, it's odd that Vi would do more than Samurais and Lords (about twice as many kills) when they were both using extended range, powerful items. Maybe it's the Polearm bonus? One thing I like (kinda off-topic) is how if one party member is, say blinded, and then other, the first one will make a comment, and then the second will say like "Same here," or something like that. You'd think the characters were almost alive...

You all are forgetting one thing re valks as opposed to other fighter types armed with polearms. Given all other things being equal, skills etc. A valk will hand out more damage because of the 25% polearms skill bonus.

And the Demonsbane is not a good weapon. Try Bloodlust, which is the best midgame-weapon imo, or Fang, Excaliber (if you already have access to them).
And remember to Berserk everytime with your fighter!!! The best hit my fighter ever did was 192HP (unconscious target), usually he does 70-90HP, which isn't too bad, especially in combination "haste"

fighter is always berserk...lord is dual-wielding with fang. and i sold bloodlust early in the game....and we all know that you cant get some items back.i just really dont see a 25% bonus in polearms as doing more damage. i thought skill basically meant you'd hit and penetrate more...not directly do more damage. i figured STR and the weapon's damage took care of that.

Speer or helbard is better always (longer range!!)
