I know you can't run up the ladder in the chief's tree, so I've walked around the base of every other tree. I'm ashamed to say that I've spent two days looking for access up in the trees. Could someone just tell me how to get up in the trees?

um... Thats how I got into the trees (& the only way till later) after talking to the Chief, behind him in a room is a ladder up & just go through a bunch of other ladders till your in.

You can go up that ladder. Ladders and ropes can sometimes be finicky with their hot spots.

You can't run up the ladder, stand away from it and move your cursor over the ladder-the arrow should change to a hand, then click on it, you'll go up.
