"Samurai...there's something I don't grasp..."

Posted by JF (Guest) on Mar-13-02 at 05:21 AM
What am I missing ? I have a human samurai. Sword, dual wield and critical strike are at 80 something... Speed and dexterity maxed out. WHY THE HELL doesn't she do more damage than 5-6 on a swing ? She really is useless in my party. Am I not understanding something ?

You forgot the most imprtant attribote of all for a weapon wielder. Strength. Granted fast abd accurate are good but penatration is what racks up hit points I am willing to bet anything that strength is less than 60 and probably less than 50 as well. If you have gottem into the safety deposit boxes at the bank and haven't sold it arm her with the sword Bloodlust. Since it is cursed you won't be able to use a ranged weapon (bow or sling) the the amount of damage you will do in close fughting will more than make up for it and as you pump up strenghth they can grow to be truly awesome. Also have your priest cast Superman on your samurai in battle that will also help.

Give your sam a couple amulets of might and you'll be in much better shape... and as has been said before, your weapons make a HUGE difference.

Try bloodlust for your sam. That has an extra attack per round and always berserks (which does double damage). You definitely need to get your strength up though.

I have not been very happy with my Samurai either. My Rougue and fighter are my tanks, easily racking up double the ouch on opponents as compared to the Sam - who by the way is at around 70 strength right now.
He has bloodlust and the wakasashi secondary weapon. I tend lately to put him on 2nd string with a bow (which he's pretty good with) and let Vi, the droid, my fighter and rougue do the dirty work.

Samurai is pretty low on magic, been working on fighter attributes mainly so far. Even so I find myself wishing for a second rogue or fighter though the occasional critical is nice (crit strike over 60 now).

Got some baad news for you if he is equipped with Bloodlust, he ain't using a bow. Bloodlust is cursed which means you cab't use an alternate primary because you can't switch to use the other weapon. So unless you have edited Bloodlust all I can say is bloodlust and bow ain'happening.

Oops you be right. Setting at work now wondering what he IS carrying. I know it's not a standard longsword and not the no dachi. Oh well.

Don't put anyone in the front, and put all your close combat people in the middle and off to one side or both sides. This will let the all attack... just move your magic users to the back. Then youd don't have to stop anyone from attacking.

I dunno maybe Im alone on the haste issue, am I? When hasted inlcuding my whole party, the samurai almost always out damages the whole party. I don't know if its me or the fact that speed for me atleast plays more of role than STR,(72) with my SPD(76).

Strength just a little more than speed. Which is better to hit an enemy six times doing litee or no damage with each strike ur less time but mazumum damage. that is one of the reasons that a lot of people are going to a fighter rather than a samurai. Fighter can inflect more damage in a single blow than a samurai can in five or six.

I agree... my samurai did more damage then the RFS, Fighter or ninja. My samura was the only one to touch Nessi, and he took her down in 4.5 rounds. You definitely need to have some strength, but you also need to have speed. if you get two attacks instead of one, that is effectively the same as having 100% more damage. I'd take extra attacks and swings over extra strength. Especially when each attack and swing has a chance of bringing a critical hit with it.

Besides the type of weapon, the strength level and the speed of your samurai there are several other things that play into the number and frequency of attacks as well as amount of damage done. Look at your close combat skill level, your senses rating, the rating with the weapon (sword, dagger, etc.) and dexterity. High speed and lightning strike don't do much good if he cannot sense where the enemy is or cannot fight well in close combat. Dexterity, speed, senses, and close combat all interact to increase chance of hitting and number of hits while strength determines amount of damage per hit. If he is using a two handed polearm and you've put points into sword then he isn't going to do well either. The point system is designed to make you think just how you want to develop your characters and not to just focus on one skill or area.

I love my Samuri. He consistently gets 60-80 damage a round. He is level 17, and has had expert skills in snake speed and reflection which he got at level 13, and currently working on the strength. He is equipped with the Demonsbane and an Enchanted Washizaki. Their are better weapons than the Demonsbane I hear, but I haven't goten them yet. He also uses a crossbow for ranged combat tha he is not too shabby at either.

If you're lucky you can get an excellent samurai
sword relatively early in the game. When you crush
Raven Rapax for Z'Ant, there is a chance he will
drop a Bushido Blade. Excellent damage, +critical
capability and it is not cursed! You can save and
reload if he doesn't drop it at first. Otherwise
you will have to wait for Ferro to use one.

Bloodlust is a nice sword but I hate it when I can't
switch weapons in mid combat. The Cane of Corpus is
the only cursed weapon I will put up with.

And what about the *light* sword? It's almost not fair when the Samurai's got the *light* sword. Kill 10% and 5-40 damage ain't too shabby. The enchanted wakizashi in the other hand doesn't hurt, either.

I take it back. It ISN'T fair with the light sword (asterisks be darned!). I guess George Lucas has copyright dibs on "light sabre"... (although it does go mmmRRRRRmmmmm mmmmmRRRRRmmm!)

Feel sorry for the critters? The muramasa blade or bushido blade are also good choices.

Two others one for Mooks only. Giant sword (mooks) and if you give him the components, Ferro the Rapax armorer, (Ferro@RapaxCastle if you want his address) will make and sell you the Ivory Blade, he'll even make it extra sharp for you.
