"So I'm standing outside the Sprite cage ..."

at the Trynnie Zoo. I reach toward the lock to start picking. The sprites go hostile and I'm in the combat screen !!

So I fire off silence and energy blasts. No targets for the energy blasts, but the silence gets one. The sprites all cast Eye for an Eye or razor cloak. After about 3 rounds no one is injured and silence has worn off.

So I try insanity. The spell drives two insane and they start hitting each other and taking razor cloak damage. I repeat the insanity spells until I am down to one sprite. I broke off combat, came back and opened the door and finished the fight.

In that same game I encountered Trynnie outcasts for the first time (after 2.5 months of game-playing) AND got a Sprite Dagger for the first time AND met Willow Elders for the first time. Does Wiz 8 have "random subsets", sets from which items/monsters are randomly dropped? That would explain how it is impossible for some people to get a light sword and other have to sell off their excess. If it isn't in your "random subset" you can't get it.

How does Wiz 8 choose random events?

In a single session I had 3 new things happen. Does Wiz 8 has a series of scripts from which it can choose monster types, items that can be randomly dropped, and NPC attitudes toward your team? If the Sprite Dagger is not in the "script" chosen when you started the game, it doesn't matter how many times you fight the sprites, you won't get it. If the Light Sword is not in the "script" chosen when you started the game, it doesn't matter how many times you fight the ghosts of Bayjin, you won't get it.

I have already sent 4 teams through Trynton so I know exactly what to expect. Until Saturday, when I got 4 surprises (I forgot to mention Milano Calzone's attack-on-sight attitude).

Think about the gorrors treasures. If you didn't already know what the layout was, and didn't save and reload a 100 times, you could play for years before seeing some treasure items ... like you might never see an excalibur. Or if you did, you might never get one when you already had mantis gloves ... thus you could swear that the two were mutually exclusive.

I really don't think that they constrain the random stuff to subsets at the outset of the game. I think you are just experiencing the random number generator, thus leading to replayability - I know every time I play, I find something new, so want to play one more time to find *everything*.

Actually i can't say how it works in wizardry8 but if there is something like the "Sir-Tech school of game design", i think i can call in my experience in Jagged Alliance 2.
In JA2, things like locations and existence of certain "encounters" where generated at the beginning of the game. So when you play the game twice, you dont find the same people or objects in the same place, and certain items (weapons) might or might not be present in the game.

It's reasonable to think the same principle was applied, but i havent played enough to have any evidene on that.

Thanks Luis
