"AC vs Armor type(minimal, light, med, heavy). Which is more important?"

Posted by gd2 (Guest) on Dec-01-01 at 03:33 AM
Hi all,
been wondering about this for awhile... So which takes precedence? Which is better more reliable? A lighter armor with higher AC or a heavier armor with lower AC? Here's an expl... A Studded Hauberk, with 8AC and a "Light" Armor rating vs a Bronze Cuirass, with 6AC and a "Heavy" Armor Rating. Which armor is the better armor here? Wiz8 seems like the kind of game where the better an item is the more expensive it is, at least as a rule, and yet the Bronze Cuirass sells for more than does the Studded Hauberk. I was speculating that maybe heavier armors might assure less chance of penetration and damage but how can something with 6AC be better than 8AC?

If anyone knows for surewhat the deal is any insights would be much appreciated.

I just thought it was an indication of how much it weighed. I always thought the AC number was telling me how good it protects.

Na cant just be the simple weight; must be sokething more than just that. Because the armors listed as heavy are indeed more tyhan literally heavy; they would at least in theory offer better protection than armors designated as light or medium. For expl, a metal breastplate would, aside from the AC numbers, ideally offer better protection in most ways than anything leather(all leather are listed as light). Why would all the medium and heavy armors cost more than the light and minimal armors too? There must be somethig to it that we just dont know. If it is a simple matter of weight that'd be great. But I somehow doubt that...

Answer from VN board

The armor type just has to do with weight.
Since the more cc the character has the more it affects initiative and AC (@ 50% and 70%).
There for if two pieces of armor have the same AC, say +9, but one is light and one is heavy the main difference is the weight and the effect on CC. The light my only weigh 18lsb while the heavy could be upwards of 32lbs. Now for you fighter and Valkyrie types this isn't such a big deal b/c they have large CC so the heavy is a better VALUE.
But for someone like the gadgeteer who has to carry around a lot of heavy ammo and gadgets it might be worth the extra gold for the light armor. Then you can carry more impaling stones, quarrels, etc. on their personal invetories and not have to always go into the pary inv. I also like to give my ranged char some close combat weapons like swords and shields and these can weigh a lot.

Hope that helps.

Ya actually it does help quite a lot! Thanks man. So the only "Value" thats really involved isnt a numerical one that helps in protection but just one that saves gold .

perhaps heavier armor also drains stamina quicker when fighting/moving

just a thought, im too lazy to test this myself
