"Generic Yammering"

I was hoping someone else could tell me what games they feel are similar to the Wizardry series. I found the old Bard's Tale series to be the closest I could find. It was thoroughly enjoyable. Might and Magic's 1-5 were close as well, but 6, 7 and now 8 are getting further away from the feel of a classic RPG IMO. I haven't finished 6 or 7 and may not buy 8. The Ultima series was good through 6, but again I feel they drifted away from the game I want to play.

Are there any shareware or less widely known games out there for gamers such as myself? I was so frustrated last year with "RPGs" *cough* that I learned Visual Basic so I could make a classic RPG. It's an ongoing process.

I agree totally with you on Bard's Tale. The nice thing about having it in the Apple format, was that you could bring characters over from Wiz and Ultima. I still have characters from that experience and I love it. That is a definate bonus!!

I haven't found anything similar to Wizardry at all. My sis in-law thinks that the Final Fantasy series are the *BEST* CRPG's. Boy, she has no clue!! I have watched her play it and I cannot figure out why they call it a RPG. By the way, she has never played AD&D--so that explains it.

The final fantasy games are interesting, just wouldn't really meet most of our criteria for a true rpg. However, have you ever seen the first one? Sure, the graphics aren't exactly great since it is on the original NES, but it is definitely more of an rpg than its successors. Get to pick your character classes, name your characters, and go randomly wandering around until you decide to follow the plot. Even some of the ones on the SNES were pretty interesting. In FF5, you could even change your 'jobs' or classes, and retain certain skills and such. They've definitely dumbed down the final fantasy series to appeal more to the mass market, have more of a cinematic feel, and be much simpler.

I did not know you could transfer characters between Wizardry, Ultima 1 and Bards Tale using the apple format. That would have been intersting just to see how they transfered (abilities, weapons, gold, alignment etc..). Maybe even save some time on creating characters.

You could only transfer a character *from* Wizardry 1,2,3 or Ultima 1,2,3 to Bard's Tale. You could never transfer from Bard's Tale to the others.

Actually it was interesting. Everything would transfer except the *special* magickal stuff. But in Bard's Tale, you have 4 magikal classes instead of the 2 in Wiz, so you would have to work on the other three to get some grand spells.

It was definatly a *good* thing to be able to transfer. After all, how many 1st level characters would have all their spells in one of the classes. Or have hight AC or hit points?

I haven't tried it with the Ultima series, but one of these days I will try just to see what happens...
